The London Opening Range: Definition Problems and Fair Expectations

Post by Shadow Trader »

Opening range concepts come from equity and futures trading, where a defined open exists. In spot FX, the London open is not a single print, so the range has to be defined by convention. Common choices include the first fifteen, thirty, or sixty minutes after eight in the morning London time.

The idea rests on liquidity arriving as European banks and funds begin trading. The Asian session often leaves a relatively compact range, and London activity can break from it. Some traders therefore mark the Asian high and low, then watch how price behaves around them.

Care is needed with expectations. A breakout of the opening range is not a reliable continuation signal. London sometimes begins with a move that reverses the late-Asian direction, and some mornings produce no meaningful range break at all. Daylight saving changes between the United Kingdom and the United States also shift the overlap with New York for a few weeks each year, altering behaviour.

Practical testing helps. A scalper can log each morning for a few weeks and record whether the first break held, failed, or chopped, across a single pair. That produces an honest sample of behaviour on that instrument. Spreads at the open can widen briefly, which affects tight targets.
