Consistency Rules and the Problem With a Great Day

Post by Shadow Trader »

Consistency rules appear in different forms, but the common idea is that no single day or trade should account for too large a share of total profit. Where such a rule exists, a rare outsized day can actually delay a pass, because the target may need to be rebalanced by further trading on other days.

For a scalper this changes the meaning of a good session. A day that captures an unusually large move around a news release may look ideal, yet under a consistency rule it raises the bar for everything that follows. Steady, similar-sized days become more valuable than a lumpy equity curve.

Several adjustments tend to follow. Daily profit targets, or a soft cap above which trading stops, keep results even. Position size stays fairly constant instead of scaling with confidence. Trades with fat-tailed payoffs, such as holding through events, fit poorly, while repeatable setups with modest reward-to-risk fit well.

There is a cost to bending a strategy toward the rule. Stopping early on strong days gives up expectancy that the strategy might otherwise earn, so the rule is really a price paid for access to the account. Reading the exact formula, including whether it applies to a single day or a single trade, helps estimate that price honestly before paying the evaluation fee.
