Withdrawal Terms and Bonus Conditions: Reading the Exit Before the Entry

Post by Shadow Trader »

Terms around withdrawals and bonuses frequently reveal more about a broker than quoted spreads do. Deposits are usually frictionless; the real test is how money leaves the account and under what conditions.

Bonus structures deserve particular caution. Credits tied to a trading volume requirement may lock the original deposit as well as the bonus until the target is reached. Clauses that cancel profits if a bonus was "used" can turn a withdrawal into a dispute. For scalpers, high volume requirements can also push toward overtrading just to unlock funds.

Other warning signs include unusually high withdrawal fees, a requirement to withdraw only to the original funding method with no alternatives, long and undefined processing windows, sudden requests for new documents after a profitable period, and terms allowing account closure and profit cancellation at the broker's sole discretion.

A practical test is to verify the process early: complete identity verification at the start, read the withdrawal section before depositing, and consider a small withdrawal to see how it behaves. What the terms promise and what the process delivers should match.

Volume-linked bonuses are the main trap we see with new traders in Asia. The terms often say the deposit plus the bonus can't be withdrawn until a lot count is reached, and the lot count is set so that a small account needs months of heavy trading.

Another detail to check is whether the bonus counts toward margin. If it does and is removed on withdrawal, any partial withdrawal can drop the margin level and trigger a stop-out on open positions. We advise people to decline bonuses entirely; a good broker doesn't need them.

I learned this one the expensive way with a broker that offered a 50% deposit bonus. I deposited a thousand dollars, got five hundred in credit, and didn't read carefully that the deposit itself was locked until I'd traded a set number of lots. When I wanted to withdraw part of a winning month, support explained that any withdrawal before reaching the volume would cancel the bonus and, worse, the profits made while it was active.

The margin point in the reply above is real as well. I had two positions open when I finally asked them to remove the bonus, and my margin level dropped from comfortable to close to the stop-out line in one click. I closed one trade at a loss just to be safe.

What I do now with any new broker is a test withdrawal of a small amount within the first week, before I trade much at all. If it takes more than a few business days, needs documents I've already sent, or comes back with unexpected fees, that tells me more than any spread table. I also decline every bonus offered, without exception.
