Separating Practice, Evaluation and Live Phases

Post by Shadow Trader »

Many struggles with consistency come from mixing three different activities into one. Practice, evaluation and live trading have different goals, and treating them as the same thing blurs what is actually being learned.

Practice is for skill building. It can involve replaying historical charts, repeating one setup many times, or trading demo conditions with the sole aim of improving a specific behaviour. Results during practice are secondary, and experimentation is encouraged.

Evaluation is for testing. Rules are fixed in advance, a defined number of trades or a defined period is set, and results are judged against criteria written beforehand. Changing rules mid-test invalidates the outcome, since the sample no longer represents a single method. Realistic assumptions about spread, slippage and execution delay matter here, because optimistic assumptions produce misleading conclusions.

Live trading is for execution. Experiments are kept small or left out, and the focus stays on following the plan. A scalper who tweaks the strategy during live sessions is effectively running an evaluation with real money and no controls.

Keeping the phases distinct, even by using separate accounts and journal sections, reduces confusion. A new idea begins in practice, passes through evaluation, and enters live trading only when the evidence supports it.
