Journaling Beyond Profit and Loss: Tags That Reveal Patterns

Post by Shadow Trader »

A journal that records only entry, exit and result tells very little about why outcomes occurred. Profit and loss is the final number, but it is noisy, and a single trade can win despite a poor decision or lose despite a perfect one. Tags turn a list of trades into data that can be filtered.

Several tag categories tend to be useful. Setup name identifies which pattern was traded. Session notes whether the trade took place during London, New York, or an overlap. Setup quality can be graded on a simple scale before entry, so that grading is not influenced by the result. Mistake tags label errors such as early exit, late entry, ignored rule, oversized position, or revenge trade.

The important discipline is assigning quality and mistake tags honestly and consistently. A trade can be tagged as a good decision with a bad outcome, or a bad decision with a good outcome. Over a large enough sample, those categories separate skill from luck.

Reviewing the journal by tag instead of by date often produces surprising results. A setup that feels strong may perform poorly in one session window, and one recurring mistake may account for most of the damage. Specific findings like these give a scalper something concrete to fix.
