The Shape of the Trading Day: Intraday Volatility Seasonality

Post by Shadow Trader »

Volatility in forex is not spread evenly across the clock. Average absolute returns follow a recognizable intraday profile tied to when major financial centers are active. Activity is thin during the late New York and early Asian hours, rises with the Tokyo and Sydney sessions for yen and Australasian pairs, climbs sharply into the London open, and often peaks in the London and New York overlap.

Each pair has its own fingerprint. EUR/USD and GBP/USD tend to be most active when European and American participants overlap, while USD/JPY and AUD/JPY show meaningful activity earlier in the Asian day. Spikes at fixed times, such as major data releases or fixings, sit on top of the broad curve.

This pattern matters because many indicators and thresholds ignore it. A fixed volatility breakout level may trigger constantly at the London open and almost never in the Asian lull. Normalizing range by the typical value for that same time of day gives a fairer measure of whether current activity is truly unusual.

Building an hourly average of true range from several months of data takes little effort and produces a practical map of when a chosen pair actually moves. The exact shape shifts with daylight saving changes, so the map should be rechecked twice a year.
