Stop Orders vs Stop-Limit Orders: Two Different Promises

Post by Shadow Trader »

A stop order promises a trigger, not a price. Once the market touches the trigger level, it becomes a market order and fills at the next available price, which in fast conditions can be well beyond the trigger. That gap is slippage, and it is the cost of certainty of execution.

A stop-limit order reverses the trade-off. After the trigger, it becomes a limit order with a maximum acceptable price. Fill price is controlled, but execution is not guaranteed. If price gaps through the limit and keeps moving, the order may sit unfilled while the position continues to run against the trader.

The distinction matters most for protective exits. Stop-limit logic on a loss-cutting order can leave exposure open precisely when the market is moving fastest. Many scalpers therefore consider stop-limit orders mainly for entries, where a missed trade costs nothing beyond opportunity.

Another quirk is the trigger reference. On some platforms a buy stop triggers off the ask while a sell stop triggers off the bid, so spread widening can trip an order before the visible chart price reaches the level. Checking which side the platform uses avoids confusion.
