The London-New York Overlap Is Not One Uniform Block

Post by Shadow Trader »

The overlap between London and New York, roughly 8:00 am to 12:00 pm New York time, is typically the busiest stretch of the forex day. Yet the overlap is not a uniform block of opportunity. Its character changes noticeably from the first hour to the last.

The opening portion carries the strongest influence of American data releases and equity market open flows. Spreads are tight and moves can be rapid. As London's afternoon advances, European desks begin reducing risk, and the 4:00 pm London benchmark fixing can produce its own burst of activity around that time.

After London leaves, order flow thins, and price levels that held with force earlier may behave differently. Momentum that looked clean at 9:00 can turn choppy by 11:30, with more frequent false breaks and smaller follow-through. Participants who apply the same assumptions across the whole overlap sometimes misread this decay as a change in market direction.

One approach among scalpers is to log trades by hour and compare results across the overlap, since averages hide the shift. Even a simple tally of range per thirty-minute block makes the fading intensity visible and can show when a strategy stops fitting conditions.

Agree that the overlap changes character. From our logs on EURUSD, the hour after US data and the equity open has about twice the range of the last hour before London closes. After 11:00 New York, many moves are position adjustments by European desks before they leave, and they often reverse partially.

For traders in Asia, this is late evening or close to midnight, so most of us only trade the first hour of it, mainly on data days. The rest of the overlap rarely justifies staying up.
