A Scalper's Guide to the Rollover Boundary

Post by Shadow Trader »

Swap is booked according to a simple rule: any position still open at the rollover timestamp is charged or credited, regardless of how long it has been held. A trade lasting thirty seconds that straddles the boundary pays the full daily swap, while a trade lasting ten hours that closes just before it pays nothing.

That makes the minutes surrounding rollover unusual for short-term traders. Closing a position a short time before the cutoff avoids the charge entirely, yet the same window is when spreads widen and liquidity thins. The financial saving from avoiding swap must be weighed against the execution cost of exiting during poor conditions.

Server time deserves attention. The booking depends on the broker's server clock, not the local clock of the trader or the exchange. Pending orders and trailing stops that remain active across rollover can also fill at unfavorable prices when quotes briefly become irregular.

Reviewing the account statement reveals how many trades were charged and by how much. A scalping approach that regularly crosses the boundary by accident may be accumulating small recurring costs that do not appear in per-trade profit calculations but show up clearly in the monthly total.
