Reading your trading plan aloud before the session

Post by Shadow Trader »

It might feel silly, but reading your rules aloud each morning has a surprising effect. When you only read silently, you skim and your mind drifts, and rules blur into vague intentions. Speaking them forces you to process each sentence. I keep my plan to one page: the setups I trade, the conditions required, the maximum risk, the daily loss limit, and the times I trade. Before I begin, I read it aloud, at normal speed, and then answer one question: what is the one rule I am most likely to break today? Naming it makes me more alert to it. Over time, I noticed that the rule I broke most often was entering without waiting for the candle close, so I added an explicit reminder in my checklist. The act of reading also reconnects me with the reasons behind the rules, which makes it easier to follow them when there is pressure. If the plan is too long to read in two minutes, it is probably too complicated to execute under stress. Trim it until it fits.

Naming the rule you are most likely to break is the clever part. Mine changes over time: for months it was moving the stop, lately it is trading the first ten minutes after the open. Updating that line weekly keeps the routine from becoming automatic and ignored.
