The New York close and why daily candles matter more than they seem

Post by Shadow Trader »

Many traders ignore what happens at the close of the New York session, but the daily candle's close often carries information. A daily candle that sweeps the previous day's high and closes back below it, with a long upper wick, is a classic rejection pattern. A close well above it indicates acceptance. I watch daily closes because they define the previous day's high, low, and close, which many participants use as references the next day. This is why levels from the previous day's close often act as a magnet or a pivot in the early part of the next session. When I plan a trading day, I note whether yesterday closed near its high or low, whether it swept anything, and where the midpoint of yesterday's range sits. That gives me a sense of whether early moves are more likely continuation or retracement. It is not a prediction, only context. Consider adjusting your chart's daily close time to match your broker's New York close setting so that you are looking at the same candles most other traders use.

The daily close matters a lot. One thing to remember is that the daily candle depends on the broker's server time, which is usually New York close, but not always. A broker with a GMT server shows a different daily close and different previous day levels, which can lead to confusion when comparing charts. Checking which daily close your broker uses before relying on these levels is worth doing.
