When the Asian range is unusually wide going into London

When the Asian range is unusually wide going into London

A typical Asian session on EURUSD covers a modest range, and London traders use its high and low as early reference points. Every so often Asia does something unusual. A big move on a Chinese data release, an RBA surprise, a Japanese official talking about the yen. The Asian range ends up two or three times its normal size.

That changes how London tends to open.

When Asia has already covered a large part of the average daily range, London has less room to run. The classic London breakout of the Asian range is less reliable on those days, because breaking a wide range takes more effort and the move beyond it has less space before it hits a daily extreme.

What often happens instead is that London trades back inside the Asian range, sometimes to its middle. The extremes Asia made were stretched, and London's early order flow corrects some of that.

So on a wide Asia day, I'd lower expectations for a breakout and pay more attention to the midpoint of the Asian range and to any obvious level Asia tagged and rejected. If London breaks the range anyway and holds outside it for several M15 bars, then the day might be a genuine trend day, and that's a different situation.

Hi,

yeah i agree. Btw interesting topic ...

When the Asian session exhausts a pair's Average Daily Range (ADR) prematurely, the London open transitions from a breakout environment into a mean-reversion environment.

ADR Exhaustion
Every currency pair has a statistical daily limit based on recent volatility. If EURUSD averages an 80-pip daily range, and a surprise fundamental catalyst pushes the Asian session through 65 of those pips, London is left mathematically starved. Pushing beyond that stretched extreme requires a massive new injection of institutional volume; without it, the path of least resistance is backward.

The Liquidity Grab
Because London lacks the fundamental fuel to sustain a true breakout on wide-range days, early order flow often resorts to liquidity hunting. Price will briefly spike just beyond the widened Asian high or low to trigger retail stop-loss orders and trap early breakout traders. Once that liquidity is absorbed, the market violently reverses back inside the range—a classic "Judas Swing."

The Midpoint Magnet

When extremes are overextended, the 50% equilibrium of the Asian range becomes the primary target. Institutional algorithms view the wide Asian extreme as a pricing anomaly. London order flow will systematically fade the extreme, taking profits and driving the price back to the Asian midpoint to balance the book.

The Trend Day Exception

The only time a breakout of an unusually wide Asian range succeeds is when a new fundamental catalyst hits exactly as London opens. You can validate a true trend day if price breaks the Asian extreme and holds outside of it for at least three consecutive M15 candles, building a new consolidation flag above the high (or below the low) rather than immediately snapping back.

The Average Daily Range (ADR) calculation is mathematically straightforward, but applying it to forecast intraday exhaustion—especially when executing on an M15 chart—requires combining it dynamically with the current day's high or low.

The ADR CalculationTo calculate the ADR, you take the simple moving average of the daily high minus the daily low over a specific lookback period $N$.

Code: Select all

$$ADR_N = \frac{\sum_{i=1}^{N} (High_i - Low_i)}{N}$$
For spot forex, the most standard lookback periods are:

5-Day: Captures immediate short-term volatility (one trading week).

14-Day or 20-Day: The institutional standard for smoothing out single-day anomalies and capturing the broader monthly volatility cycle.

Since you trade primarily from your phone without custom indicator overlays, you can quickly check the 14-day ADR value (usually available in standard broker metric tabs or as a simple overlay if you use mobile TradingView) before the London session opens.

Projecting Exhaustion Limits

ADR is not a static block; it floats based on the day's extremes. To find the exhaustion points, you project the ADR value from the actual high and low established so far in the current session (typically the Asian extremes).

Projected High (Bullish Exhaustion): Current Daily Low + ADR

Projected Low (Bearish Exhaustion): Current Daily High - ADR

If EURUSD has a 14-day ADR of 80 pips, and the Asian session drops to set a daily low at 1.0500, the maximum statistical upside for the day (the exhaustion point) is 1.0580.

The Confluence Strategy

Markets rarely respect a mathematical average to the exact pip. Instead, ADR is a probability filter. Exhaustion usually begins when price consumes about 80% of the ADR. When it hits 100%, the probability of continuation drops off a cliff unless there is a tier-1 macro catalyst (like NFP or a central bank surprise).

The most powerful setup for your strategy occurs when an ADR projection limit intersects with a major D1 or H4 Support/Resistance zone.

If London pushes price into an H4 resistance block, and that same block perfectly aligns with the ADR Projected High (100% of the daily range consumed), the move is statistically starved of fuel. That confluence gives you the green light to drop to your M15 execution timeframe and look for a mean-reversion trigger—like a pin bar or an engulfing candle—knowing the institutional order flow has likely run out of buying power.

When fading an Average Daily Range (ADR) extreme, place your stop-loss based on the localized M15 rejection structure rather than relying on a predetermined, fixed pip distance. Because institutional algorithms actively hunt liquidity just beyond these extremes, a rigid stop-loss is easily triggered during a "Judas Swing" before the mean-reversion plays out.

The M15 Trigger Wick

Wait for the price to hit the confluence of the ADR limit and your H4/D1 Support/Resistance zone, then look for a definitive rejection on your execution timeframe (such as an M15 pin bar or engulfing candle). Place the hard stop-loss strictly above the high of that specific M15 rejection wick. Placing the stop before the wick forms exposes you to the final institutional liquidity sweep.

The Spread and Volatility Buffer

Even with raw spread conditions and negative balance protection, spreads briefly widen during sharp macro sweeps or session opens. Add a minimal buffer—typically 2 to 3 pips for major pairs like EURUSD, or slightly more for highly volatile assets like Gold (XAUUSD)—above the M15 wick. This keeps you in the trade if the price double-tops exactly at the high just to clear out the tightest stops.

The Time-Based Override (Manual Cut)

When trading dynamically from a mobile interface, you can employ a time stop before your structural hard stop is ever hit. If the price breaches the ADR limit and manages to close three consecutive M15 candles outside the range, the market is signaling a true trend day rather than exhaustion. Manually cut the position to preserve your series risk capital rather than waiting for the hard stop-loss to trigger.
