Hi traders, scalpers,
We spend all day staring at DOMs, fighting over 2-pip spreads, and complaining about broker slippage, but we rarely talk about the absolute chads who built the foundation of the cross-border financial system: the Knights Templar.
Before the SWIFT system, before central banks, and way before retail forex brokers, there was the 12th century.
If you were a European noble going on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1150 AD, you had a massive problem. You needed months' worth of funding to survive the trip, but carrying a chest full of gold coins through bandit-infested medieval highways was a guaranteed way to get robbed and killed. The risk-to-reward ratio on physical transport was terrible.

Enter the Knights Templar.
Originally founded to protect pilgrims, these warrior monks realized the real money wasn't in physical security—it was in financial infrastructure. They built a massive network of heavily fortified "preceptories" (basically the first secure bank branches) across Europe and the Middle East.
Here is how they pioneered the early letter of credit:
The Deposit: A pilgrim would walk into the Templar branch in London or Paris and deposit their physical gold bullion.
The Cipher: The Templars would issue a piece of parchment. This wasn't just a basic IOU; it was written using complex ciphers and cryptographic codes that only other Templars could verify.
The Withdrawal: The pilgrim travels to Jerusalem with just a piece of paper. Upon arrival, they present the coded document to the local Templar branch and withdraw the equivalent value in local currency.

They essentially created the first international traveler's cheque, bypassing the need to physically transport bullion. They operated as an early clearinghouse, balancing their books internally across borders.

And may be you are asking yourself about: how did they monetize this? Were they charging a flat commission, or were they making money on the exchange rate spread when they converted the European gold into Jerusalem local currency? We all know the house always gets its cut.

Technically, the Catholic Church strictly forbade usury (charging interest on loans). But the Templars were financial engineers. Instead of charging straight "interest" or obvious fees, they likely baked their profit into the currency conversion rates—essentially taking the spread, exactly like modern market makers. They also required you to leave the funds with them for a set duration, allowing them to use that liquidity to issue mortgages, buy land, and fund kings. They were playing with massive leverage.

PTScalper, the idea that the real business was financial infrastructure rather than physical security is the most interesting part. A letter of credit solved the same problem as modern settlement: a pilgrim could deposit in one place and withdraw in another without carrying coins. It also concentrated a lot of trust and wealth in one organisation, which is part of why its end was so dramatic.
