Some mornings stack releases: German state CPI at 09:00 local, eurozone PMI at 09:00 UK, UK PMI at 09:30. Or US mornings with CPI, retail sales and jobless claims all at 13:30. Which one drives the market?
General patterns:
- The release most tied to the current central bank focus tends to dominate. If the ECB is focused on inflation, the CPI number matters more than PMIs.
- Releases from larger economies dominate smaller ones for cross pairs.
- When releases conflict (strong CPI, weak retail sales), price often moves sharply then chops as the market tries to reconcile them.
- Simultaneous US releases at 13:30 are usually interpreted together, with the headline that moves Fed expectations most taking priority.
Practical approach: before the session, rank the releases by relevance to current themes. Plan reactions to the top one, and treat the others as modifiers.
For scalpers, stacked-release hours are often best avoided entirely. The noise from conflicting signals makes clean trades rare.
