The 9:30 New York stock open and USD pairs in the half hour after

Most FX traders plan around the 8:30 New York data and then treat everything after that as one block. I think the US cash equity open at 9:30 deserves its own spot in the session plan.

At 9:30 stock trading opens properly and a lot of the day's risk positioning starts showing up at once. If equities open with a big gap and keep going in that direction, pairs that follow risk sentiment, AUDUSD and USDJPY especially, often move with them. If the equity open reverses the overnight futures move, FX can reverse too, sometimes undoing whatever the 8:30 release started.

The 10:00 slot adds to it. Several US releases come out at 10, and there's the 10am New York option cut. So the window from 9:30 to around 10:15 can easily be busier than the data at 8:30.

For the floor, here's how I'd set it up. Note where index futures are trading before the open and whether the 8:30 data pushed them. Mark the FX levels that the 8:30 move created. Then at 9:30 watch whether stocks continue or reverse, and whether your pair goes with them or ignores them.

If a pair ignores a strong equity move, that's information too. It usually means something pair specific is driving it, and the risk link is weak today.

It's useful to have an index chart open next to the FX chart through this window. S&P or Nasdaq futures on M1 next to USDJPY on M1 makes the link obvious when it's there and obvious when it isn't. Some days they move almost tick for tick, other days there's no relationship at all. Seeing it live is better than assuming the correlation from a textbook. If the link is clearly there today, a fresh move in equities can be the early warning for your pair by a few seconds.

Spreads usually stay reasonable at 9:30 because it isn't a scheduled FX release, so you don't get the same widening you see at 8:30. That makes it a more tradeable window for scalpers than the data spike itself. The catch is that the moves can be choppy in the first couple of minutes as the equity open settles. Waiting for the first five minute candle after 9:30 to close before doing anything is a simple way to avoid getting whipped around while the cash market finds its feet. On days with a big earnings name reporting before the bell, give it a little longer.

Gold reacts to this window as well, though less predictably. When stocks sell off hard at the open, gold can go either way depending on whether the move is driven by yields, the dollar, or straight risk reduction. On those days I'd look at US yields as well before trusting any gold read from the equity open. For the majors the equity link is usually simpler. For gold there are more moving parts and it's easier to get it wrong. Smaller size on gold through this window is a sensible default until the picture is clear.

Days when the US cash market is closed but FX trades normally show how much this window matters. On a US stock market holiday the 9:30 to 10:30 stretch is often noticeably flatter on USD pairs, even if London is fully open. If you trade that window regularly, check the US exchange holiday calendar as part of the weekly prep, because the session will feel completely different and the usual setups may not show up at all. The same goes for the half days around some holidays, when the cash market closes early and the afternoon goes quiet sooner than usual.

Checking yields before trusting a gold read is good advice. For USDJPY the equity link is usually clearer than for gold. When US stocks sell off at the open together with lower yields, the yen tends to firm, and USDJPY often follows the yield move more than the index itself. When stocks drop but yields rise, the reaction in USDJPY is much less reliable. Having the ten year yield on a small chart next to USDJPY during the first half hour makes those two cases easy to tell apart.
