Running a personal account next to a prop account

Running a personal account next to a prop account

A lot of prop traders also have a personal trading account. That's normal, but mixing the two can cause problems if you're not careful.

The first issue is rules. The prop account has strict drawdown, daily loss and sometimes consistency rules. The personal account doesn't. If you trade both with the same mindset, you might loosen up on the prop account or tighten up too much on the personal one.

The second is style drift. It's easy to start using the personal account for the trades you wouldn't take on the prop account, the riskier or more experimental ones. That can be fine if it's deliberate. If it happens because you're frustrated with prop rules, it can lead to bad habits.

The third is attention. Watching two accounts at once splits focus, especially if they're on different platforms.

What helps is giving each account a clear purpose. For example, the prop account runs your main strategy at fixed risk, and the personal account is for testing a new idea at very small size. Or the personal account runs a longer timeframe strategy that doesn't need attention during the session.

Also check the firm's rules. Some prohibit hedging between a prop account and a personal one, which makes sense, since that would be gaming the evaluation.

Journals should be separate too, or at least have a clear account column. Results from a personal account at different risk, with different trades, shouldn't be mixed with the prop account's numbers. Otherwise it's hard to tell how your main strategy is doing on the account where the rules matter most. Separate tabs in the same spreadsheet are enough. The important thing is being able to look at the prop results alone at the end of each week. Mixed numbers make the prop result look better or worse than it really is, and you end up drawing the wrong conclusions about your main strategy.

One practical point is platform separation. If both accounts are on MT5 at different brokers, run them in separate terminals with clearly different chart colours or layouts. It's surprisingly easy to place an order on the wrong account when two terminals look identical. A bright background on one, or a label on the chart showing the account name, helps a lot. It sounds silly until you've seen someone post about a trade they meant for one account landing on the other. A coloured background on one terminal is the easiest fix and takes seconds to set up.

Keeping separate strategies on the two accounts can help, so that the prop account follows its strict rules and the personal account can be used for testing. Mixing the same trades across both makes it harder to follow the prop rules.

Some firms also have rules about trading against your own positions on other accounts. Hedging a prop position on a personal account is usually forbidden, and it is worth checking the terms before trading both.

Risk on the personal account can creep up when the prop account is doing well. If the prop account is making steady progress, it's tempting to take bigger risks on the personal account to make faster gains, since it feels like the 'real' money is coming from elsewhere. That can undo a lot of good work. Keeping the personal account's risk rules written down, and separate from how the prop account is doing, helps avoid that. Each account should have its own rules that don't depend on the other. A short list taped next to the screen does the job.

Some traders use the personal account to test strategy changes before applying them to the prop account. That can work well, as long as the risk on the personal account is small. It gives live data on a change without putting the prop account at risk. The catch is that conditions differ, like spreads, commissions and execution, so results won't transfer exactly. But it's a reasonable way to see whether a change behaves as expected in live conditions before risking the evaluation or funded account on it. Small size on the test account keeps the experiment cheap.
