Adding a higher timeframe screenshot to each journal entry

Adding a higher timeframe screenshot to each journal entry

Most journal screenshots show the entry timeframe. M5 or M1, entry, stop, target marked. That's useful. But when you look back weeks later, you often can't remember what the bigger picture was at the time.

A second screenshot of the higher timeframe, taken at the moment of entry, fixes that. H1 or H4, with your key levels marked and the entry location shown. It takes a few extra seconds.

When reviewing, the higher timeframe shot shows things the entry chart doesn't. Was the trade into a major level or away from it? Was it with the higher timeframe trend or against it? Was there an obvious target in the way?

After a month or two, comparing winners and losers with both screenshots often shows patterns that the entry chart alone hides. For example, many losing longs might turn out to have been taken just below an H4 resistance that wasn't visible on M5.

Naming the screenshots consistently helps, with the date, pair and timeframe in the file name. Then you can find both images for any trade quickly.

The key is taking the higher timeframe shot at entry, not afterwards. Later, the chart has moved on, and the context is lost.

TradingView makes this easy with a multi-chart layout. Two charts side by side, entry timeframe and higher timeframe, and one screenshot captures both. In MT4 or MT5, tiling two chart windows does the same. One image with both timeframes is easier to review than two separate files, and it guarantees they were captured at the same moment. The image is a bit smaller, but the context is clear enough for review purposes. It also means the review is a single image per trade rather than a hunt through folders. Consistency matters more here.

Marking your levels the same way on both timeframes makes the screenshots easier to compare. Same colours for support and resistance, same line style for session levels. When you review, you don't have to work out what each line means. It also makes it easier to share screenshots on the forum, since readers can follow your marks without a legend. Consistency in drawing is a small habit, but it makes the whole journal more readable. It also saves explaining your markings every time you post a chart for feedback. It adds up over a few months of entries.

Looking back, the H1 or H4 shot often explains why a trade worked or failed, for example because it was against a strong H1 move.

To keep it quick, some traders use a template with both timeframes in one window, so a single screenshot captures both. That keeps the journal routine short while adding the extra information.

Taking the screenshot at the time of entry, rather than after the trade, matters for the higher timeframe too. If you take it after, the higher timeframe candle has moved and shows information you didn't have when you entered. The point of the screenshot is to record what you saw at the decision. A quick hotkey that captures both charts at once makes this easy. On most systems a screenshot tool with a shortcut can save straight into a dated folder, so it takes a second and doesn't interrupt the trade.

Do people mark where on the higher timeframe they think price is going, as well as where it is? I've started drawing a simple arrow or target on the H1 screenshot at entry, showing what I expected. Later, comparing that with what actually happened is useful. It shows whether my higher timeframe read was usually right, separate from whether the trade itself worked. Sometimes the trade loses but the H1 read was correct, just with bad timing. Other times the trade wins despite a wrong H1 read, which is a lucky result that should be noted as luck.
