The session after you broke your own rules

The session after you broke your own rules

It happens to everyone eventually. You move a stop, take a trade that wasn't a setup, double the size because you were sure. Maybe it worked, maybe it didn't. Either way, the next session has a different feel.

If the rule break lost money, there's often a pull to make it back, which leads to more breaks. If it made money, there's a quieter pull to do it again, which is arguably worse. And there's often some guilt or frustration that makes it hard to trade calmly.

What I try to do before the next session is three things. Write down exactly which rule I broke and what was going on at the time. Decide whether the rule itself needs changing, or whether it was just me not following it. And then start the session at normal size with the plan as written, no make-up trades.

Some people drop size for the session after a rule break, as a kind of reset. That can help, as long as it's a planned rule rather than punishment.

The important thing is not letting one break turn into a habit. One break is a mistake. Several in a row is a pattern, and patterns are much harder to undo once they settle in.

Looking at what triggered the break is usually more useful than the break itself. Was it after a loss? A missed move? Boredom in a slow market? If the trigger is clear, you can plan around it, for example a mandatory break after two losses. Without knowing the trigger, the next break is just as likely as the last one. The journal entry from that session, if you wrote one, often shows the trigger more clearly than memory does a day later. Having that written down is what makes the plan for the next session concrete instead of vague.

A winning rule break is worth a separate mention, because it's the one that does the most damage over time. It teaches you that breaking rules works. Logging it as a rule break, not as a win, keeps your records honest. Over time, if you track the results of all rule breaks together, they usually come out worse than rule following trades, which is good evidence to remember the next time a break feels justified in the moment. Tracking them together keeps the memory honest. The numbers rarely lie about this, even when the feeling in the moment says otherwise.

The session after a rule break needs a clear plan. A simple approach: normal size, one setup only, and a stop after one loss. That reduces the chance of a second rule break while you get back into the routine.

If the rule break worked, the danger is that it starts to feel acceptable. Writing down what happened and why it was a rule break, even though it made money, helps prevent that.

Reducing size for the next session is common advice, and it can help. But I'd be careful not to turn it into a punishment that makes you feel worse. The point of trading smaller after a rule break is to rebuild consistency with less pressure, not to pay a penalty. Framing it as a reset rather than a punishment makes it easier to stick to. A session or two at reduced size, following the rules carefully, and then back to normal is a reasonable approach for most people. Writing down when the reset ends keeps it from dragging on.

Should the next session be shorter as well as smaller? Some traders find that the rule break came from trading too long, and limiting the next session to a shorter window helps. Others find the break came from something unrelated, like a specific setup that tempted them. Knowing the cause decides the fix. If it was fatigue, shorter sessions make sense. If it was a particular trigger, avoiding that trigger matters more. A note about the likely cause, written soon after the break, helps choose the right response. Even a single line in the journal is enough for that.
