Choosing the account currency for a prop evaluation

Choosing the account currency for a prop evaluation

Some firms let you choose the currency of the evaluation account, typically USD, EUR or GBP. It's usually a dropdown at checkout that most people don't think about. It can matter more than it seems.

The account currency affects how profit and loss are calculated. If your account is in EUR and you trade EURUSD, profits are in USD and get converted to EUR. Your results depend slightly on the exchange rate as well as your trades. If you trade a lot of USD pairs, a USD account keeps things simpler.

Payouts are often paid in the account currency, or converted to it. If you live somewhere that uses GBP, a GBP account might mean less conversion cost when you receive payouts. If the firm pays in USD regardless, a USD account might be simpler.

The drawdown and profit targets are in the account currency too. If the account currency moves a lot against the currency you think in, the numbers feel different, even though the percentages are the same.

Also, some firms price evaluations differently in each currency, so one might be slightly cheaper.

I'd pick the currency that matches the pairs you trade most or the currency you'll receive payouts in. It's a small decision, but it's easy to get right.

Position size calculators need the right account currency setting. If you use a calculator set to USD on a EUR account, your size will be slightly off. It's a small difference, but on a prop account with tight daily limits, it's one more thing that can push a loss beyond what you planned. Most calculators and EAs read the account currency automatically, but manual calculators often have a setting you have to change yourself. Check it the first time you set up a new account. A mismatch between calculator and account currency is easy to miss for weeks, because the error is small on most pairs and only shows up properly on the crosses.

Firms usually show the rules in their base currency, often USD, even for accounts in other currencies. A five thousand dollar drawdown limit on a EUR account might be converted at a fixed rate or simply stated as five thousand euros. Reading exactly how the limits apply in the account currency avoids confusion. It's another of those details that's easy to assume and occasionally wrong. A quick message to support clears it up before you start. Knowing the exact limit in the account currency avoids a nasty surprise near the edge. It also helps when you set up your own risk calculator for the account.

For traders whose expenses are in EUR, a EUR account can make the payout easier to plan, since the amount does not change with the exchange rate. For USD accounts, the payout in local currency changes with EURUSD.

The account currency also changes how pip values are calculated, which affects position sizing. A sizing calculator set up for a USD account will give different results on a EUR account, so it should be updated before trading.

Commission is often charged in the account currency, and the rate might differ between currencies. A firm might charge seven dollars per lot on USD accounts and a slightly different amount on EUR or GBP accounts, after conversion. Over many trades, small differences add up. I'd check the commission rate for each currency option before choosing. It's a minor factor compared with the rules and target, but it's easy to look up and might tip the decision if the other factors are similar. The firm's pricing page or support can confirm the exact figures for each option.

Is the currency choice relevant for payouts? If you live in a country with a currency different from the account, payouts will be converted, and the conversion rate and fees matter. Some firms pay out in USD only, others in several currencies. If the account is in EUR and payouts are in USD, there's a conversion step at each payout. Choosing the account currency that matches the payout currency, or your home currency, can reduce the number of conversions and the cost each time. For many people, the difference over a year of payouts is small, but it's not nothing, and it's easy to get right from the start.
