Consistency Rules and Payout Conditions in Funded Accounts

Consistency Rules and Payout Conditions in Funded Accounts

Beyond profit targets and drawdown, many funded programs add rules that affect how you trade and whether you get paid.

Consistency rules limit how much of your profit can come from a single day or trade. For example, no single day may account for more than 30 or 40 percent of total profit. The goal is to discourage lucky outsized bets. The consequence is that a great day may force you to keep trading, or to wait to withdraw, so that the share falls.

Minimum trading days require activity on a set number of days before payout. Some firms have restrictions on holding trades over weekends or through news, and on certain strategies like hedging across accounts or high-frequency tactics.

Payout rules govern when and how you can withdraw. Typical conditions include a minimum profit threshold, a waiting period between payouts, and a profit split that may change with tiers.

Fees may also recur. Some programs charge monthly subscriptions for the funded stage or reset fees after a breach.

Read the terms in full, and keep screenshots of the rules as they stood when you signed up, since terms can change.

Also research other traders' payout experiences, looking for independent accounts rather than testimonials on the firm's own site.

Practical step: list the consistency rule, minimum days, payout wait, and split of any firm you are considering.

The consistency rule can turn a great day into a problem. If one day is 50 percent of your profit and the cap is 30, you have to keep trading to dilute it, which is exactly when people give it back.

Screenshots of the rules page with the date visible. Sounds paranoid, but rules do change and support will usually point you to the current version.

The arithmetic on Fairman's 50 percent example is worse than it first looks. Say the big day made 1,000 on a total of 2,000 and the cap is 30 percent, then the total has to reach about 3,333 before that day stops counting against you.

That is another 1,333 of profit without a single day large enough to create a new problem. A losing day in between makes it harder again, because it shrinks the total while the best day stays where it was.

The way I handle it now is a soft daily ceiling while a funded account is building. Once the day reaches roughly a quarter of the profit target, I stop, even if the session is still offering setups.

It costs a little on the best days, but it means the rule never decides how I trade the following week. Pressing to dilute a big day is the exact pattern Fairman described, and I have done it.

Also worth checking which clock defines a day. One firm I looked at used server time, so a trade I closed at 22:30 London was booked to the next day.
