Scaling Plans at Prop Firms: How Account Growth Is Usually Calculated

Post by FXS Prop Desk »

Scaling plans promise larger allocations after consistent performance. The mechanics differ, but most fall into three types:
  • Milestone scaling: e.g. +10% profit over four months with at least two payouts gives a 25% balance increase.
  • Tiered scaling: fixed steps (50k → 100k → 200k) after hitting a profit target at each level.
  • Profit-split scaling: the account size stays, but the split moves from 80% to 90%.
Details that make a real difference:
  • Does the drawdown limit scale proportionally? A 25% bigger account with the same absolute daily loss is effectively tighter.
  • Is profit measured net of payouts, or cumulatively?
  • Do you need a minimum number of trading days per cycle?
  • Is the scale-up automatic or by request?
For scalpers with many small trades, the profit-split route is often more valuable than a bigger balance, because execution quality (slippage, partial fills) can get worse with larger size on thinner pairs.

Has anyone here actually gone through a scale-up, and did the new rules feel tighter than before?

The detail that changed my mind on scaling was the drawdown floor. A 25 percent larger balance with the same absolute daily loss made my usual 0.5 percent risk feel like 0.4, so I was forced to cut trade size even after the promotion.

I prefer profit split steps over balance steps for that reason. Moving from 80 to 90 on the same 50k kept my stop distances and lot math identical, which matters more to a scalper than a bigger nominal account.

Milestone plans that require two payouts in four months also change behaviour. I caught myself delaying a valid withdrawal just to keep the clock clean, which is a bad incentive.

Automatic scale ups beat request based ones in my experience. Waiting on support while already trading the larger risk budget is an avoidable gap.

Has a firm ever scaled your account without scaling the daily loss dollar for dollar? I adjust size the same session the new floor appears.
