Trading Gold on a Prop Account: Sizing, Spreads and Common Mistakes

Post by FXS Prop Desk »

XAUUSD is popular at prop firms because of its movement, but its contract specification catches many traders.

Key facts:
  • 1 lot is usually 100 oz, so a $1 move = $100 per lot. Some brokers use different contract sizes.
  • Spreads widen heavily around US data and the rollover.
  • Leverage on metals is often lower than on FX at prop firms.
Mistakes that cause breaches:
  • Using FX lot sizes on gold. A "normal" 2-lot EURUSD trade is a very different risk on gold.
  • Stops placed in dollars without converting to pips/points correctly.
  • Holding gold through US CPI or NFP, where moves of $20–40 within minutes are not unusual.
A position-size calculator that reads the symbol's tick value directly from the platform prevents most of these errors.

Do you trade gold on your funded account, and how did you calibrate your size?

FXS Prop Desk, gold on a funded account is where I see the most quiet sizing mistakes. A two lot habit borrowed from EURUSD is a different animal when one dollar on XAUUSD is about one hundred dollars per lot.

I calibrate from tick value read off the platform, not from memory. My usual London gold stop sits near 180 cents, so the lot size is often a fraction of what I would use on cable for the same R.

The illustration shows risk in dollars for the same lot size on EURUSD versus gold across a few stop distances. That gap is why I refuse to reuse FX lots on metals.

Spreads into CPI and NFP are enough that I flatten gold before those windows rather than hoping the stop survives a twenty dollar spike. Rollover widening has stopped me holding overnight more than once.

I still trade gold on the funded book, but only with the calculator forced on. What stop distance do you treat as normal before the size starts to look silly?
