Visualization, Rehearsing Your Session Before It Starts

Athletes use mental rehearsal to prepare for competition. Traders can borrow the technique to reduce surprises and build calm.

The idea: before your session, spend a few minutes imagining how you'll handle different scenarios, both good and bad.

A simple five-minute routine:

1. Sit quietly and breathe. Take a few slow breaths to settle.

2. Picture your ideal setup. See the market reach your zone, the shift appear, and you executing your checklist calmly.

3. Picture the stop loss. Imagine the trade going against you and being stopped out. Notice how you feel and imagine responding calmly: closing the trade, journaling, and moving on.

4. Picture a winning trade. See yourself following the plan, taking partial profit, and not getting greedy.

5. Picture temptation. Imagine a low-quality setup appearing and you deciding to skip it.

6. Set an intention. For example: "Today I follow my rules, regardless of results."

Benefits:

- Familiarity reduces anxiety
- You make decisions in advance, which reduces impulsive reactions
- It strengthens the link between plan and action

Visualization isn't magic, and it doesn't replace analysis. But it can prepare your emotions for what's coming.

Try it for two weeks and note any change in how you respond to stops and missed trades.

A different use of rehearsal that I didn't expect to help: picturing the platform failing. Not the market, the tools. Frozen chart, internet drops, order not filling.

I had a VPS go offline with a gold position open once and spent two minutes panicking before I remembered I could close it from my phone. Two minutes on gold during London can be a lot.

Now part of my routine is a 30 second walk through of what I'd do if the platform dies. Phone app open and logged in, broker support number written down, and the rule that I close everything rather than try to manage it.

It's the same principle as the post, deciding in advance so you're not deciding under stress. It just covers the boring disasters that no chart pattern prepares you for.

Does anyone else rehearse the technical side, or does it only cover trades and emotions?

Mental rehearsal is well established in sports psychology, so it's good to see it applied here. One suggestion for the five-minute routine: rehearse the frequent, uncomfortable scenarios as well as the stop loss. Missing the setup by a few pips and watching price run without you, or a news spike that hits right after entry, are often harder emotionally than a clean loss, and they're what usually leads to chasing.

Imagining the planned response to each ("I don't chase; I wait for the next setup at the next level") gives the brain a ready answer when the real moment comes.
