Can you scalp gold on prop the same way as on raw IC?

Post by PropScalpDesk »

Short answer from my own books: not the same way.

On raw IC, gold M1 forgives a slightly wider stop and a second attempt if the first was a spread spike. On prop, the daily loss limit and any news rules make those forgiveness habits expensive. Same level, same idea, but I cut size, refuse the second attempt, and skip gold entirely inside any raised USD Tier-1 window even if the firm text is ambiguous - ambiguity is not permission.

Also execution feel differs when the prop path is not the same liquidity venue as your raw account. I treat fills as a separate dataset: if gold slippage on the challenge account is consistently worse for two weeks, gold comes off the prop roster and stays on personal only.

Same chart. Different contract. Trade the contract.

If gold stays on the prop roster, I demand two weeks of clean process tags before increasing size. Clean means no news-window guesses and no second-attempt habit from the raw account. Gold is optional on prop for me. EURUSD is not. Optional instruments lose the argument first when limits tighten.

Same chart, different contract is a good way to put it. The second attempt habit is the one I'd highlight, because on gold M1 it can feel like a normal part of the setup on a raw account.

When I looked at my own numbers, second attempts on gold were roughly break even on my personal account, slightly positive in some months. On a challenge, the same trades would have hit the daily limit twice in three months because the losses clustered.

I'd add a point about the stop size. Gold on M1 often needs a stop of 150 to 250 points to survive normal noise. On a challenge with a 5% daily limit and 0.5% risk per trade, that pushes the lot size very small, sometimes below what the platform allows in useful increments.

Tracking fills as a separate dataset is excellent. I'd also compare spreads at entry, not just slippage.

What's your threshold for worse slippage? Mine is when the average is more than 30% above the raw account for two weeks running.

One prop angle on gold that hasn't come up yet is the consistency rule some firms use. If no single day can be more than a set share of total profit, often somewhere between 30% and 50%, gold's lumpy M1 days become a problem even when they're winners.

In my log, a good gold morning was worth about three ordinary EURUSD days. On a challenge with a 40% cap, one of those early on can mean you reach the profit target and still can't pass until the other days catch up.

That pushes you into extra trading days at the end, which is exactly when the daily limit starts to feel tight. So the risk on gold isn't only the losing trades, it's the outsized winning ones too.

What I do now is cap gold at a third of the day's risk budget on any account with a consistency rule. If gold uses its share before 10:00, it's finished for the day even with room left on the limit.

It also makes the review cleaner, because gold results can't hide a weak EURUSD week. Do you size gold from its own budget on prop, PropScalpDesk, or let both come out of the same daily number?
