Pivot Points, A Simple Map for the Day

Pivot Points, A Simple Map for the Day

Pivot points are calculated levels based on the previous period's high, low, and close. Many traders watch them because they are objective, widely published, and easy to use.

The basic setup includes:

- Pivot point (PP): the central level
- Support levels (S1, S2, S3): potential supports below the pivot
- Resistance levels (R1, R2, R3): potential resistances above the pivot

A common way to use them:

1. Add a pivot point indicator to your chart, using daily pivots for intraday trading.
2. If price opens above the pivot, the day's bias may lean bullish, and if below, bearish.
3. Watch R1 and S1 as first targets or reaction levels.
4. Look for reversals or continuation patterns near these levels.
5. Combine them with structure, liquidity, and key zones for confluence.

Strengths:

- Objective and consistent
- Many traders watch them, so they can become self-fulfilling
- Easy to define targets

Weaknesses:

- They are not magic, and price often passes through them
- Too many lines can clutter your chart
- They don't account for market context on their own

Tip: choose one version of pivots and test it. Compare how often price reacts within a few pips of those levels on your pair.

Pivots work best as context, not as stand-alone triggers.

For anyone adding these by hand, the classic version is PP = (high + low + close) / 3, then R1 = 2*PP - low, S1 = 2*PP - high, R2 = PP + (high - low) and S2 = PP - (high - low). Camarilla and Fibonacci pivots use the same inputs with different multipliers, so pick one and stay with it as you suggest.

On the test, I'd add a control. Count how often price comes within a few pips of the pivot on your pair, then do the same count for a fake level shifted 15 or 20 pips away from it. On a ranging day price touches almost anything near the open, so a raw reaction count flatters every level. If the real pivot doesn't clearly beat the fake one over a month of sessions, it's decoration.

In my experience R1 and S1 are the only ones that matter on an average day. R3 and S3 are rarely reached outside news days, and drawing them just adds lines.

Pivots seem to behave very differently depending on the calendar. On quiet days the range often stays between S1 and R1, and fades at those levels work reasonably well. On days with a big release, price regularly runs through R1 or S1 in one candle and reaches the second or third level, so fading the first touch is exactly the wrong trade. Before using the levels, I'd decide which kind of day it is, and only treat S1 and R1 as reaction levels when nothing major is scheduled.

That control is the most useful idea in the thread. What does clearly mean in practice, and what do you count as a reaction? A month of sessions is about 21 days, and with one pivot per day the counts are small enough that 9 touches against 6 could easily be chance. Running several fake levels instead of one, say shifted 10, 15, 20 and 25 pips both above and below, gives a spread of results to compare the real pivot against. On reactions, is it a reversal of a set number of pips within so many minutes of the touch, or just whether price turned at all?
