GDP release this month: what changed in my EURJPY playbook

Post by LondonScalper »

With the GDP release coming up this month, I have made a few changes to how I trade EURJPY around it. Writing them down here keeps me honest.

The issue last time: I treated eurozone GDP as a medium event for EURJPY and kept a small position through it. The figure surprised, EURJPY dropped 40 pips in a couple of minutes, and my stop slipped. Not a disaster, but a clear sign that my map was wrong.

Changes:
- GDP is now a full blackout for EURJPY: flat five minutes before, and no new trades until spread is back to normal.
- After the release, I wait for the first 15-minute candle to close before considering any trade.
- If the figure is a big surprise either way, I skip EURJPY for the rest of the morning. The move tends to keep developing, and fading it has not worked for me.
- Position size on the first trade after the release is half of normal.
- If Japanese data or comments from Japanese officials are due on the same day, EURJPY is off the list completely.

The broader lesson is that EURJPY reacts to both currencies, so my calendar for it has to include both sides. I had been watching the euro side and treating the yen side as background.

Worth knowing how the eurozone flash GDP sequence works, because the eurozone headline is often not the surprise. France publishes its first estimate early the same morning, and Germany, Spain and Italy usually report the same day, all ahead of Eurostat's eurozone figure. Those four make up most of the eurozone economy, so by the time the eurozone number comes out it's largely implied, and the bigger reactions tend to happen on the national prints, Germany especially. For EURJPY that means the risk is a cluster of releases across the morning rather than a single minute. It might be worth putting the German and French times on the blackout too, and treating the eurozone print itself as lower risk unless the national numbers pointed in different directions. The Japanese side then decides whether the move holds.

Treating eurozone GDP as a full blackout for EURJPY is the change I wish I had made earlier. Last surprise dropped the pair about 40 pips in a couple of minutes and my stop slipped through what I had called a medium event.

The attached chart is a made up EURJPY M5 illustration of that shape. Quiet candles into the print, then one release bar that covers roughly four times my normal stop before the first fifteen minute close.

I stay flat five minutes before and take no new trades until spread is back near its pre release median. The first trade after that, if any, runs at half size.

A big surprise either way kills EURJPY for the rest of my morning. Fading the move has not paid in my sample, and the follow through often outlasts the first impulse.

Same day Japanese data or official comments take the pair off the list completely. Both legs can move, and watching only the euro side was the original mistake.

I still want the fifteen minute close even when spread looks normal early. Do you wait for that close, or trade on spread snap back alone?

LondonScalper, spread back to normal needed a number or I kept cheating it. For EURJPY I want the spread under 1.5 times the median of the thirty minutes before the blackout, sustained for three M5 closes, before any post release ticket is allowed.

Half size on that first ticket still stands, and a big surprise still kills the pair for the morning. The extra rule is about Japanese speakers on the same calendar day: even a medium tier comment from a BoJ board member takes EURJPY off my list with GDP, not only formal data.

Other yen crosses inherit the same map. USDJPY and GBPJPY get the dual calendar too, because watching only the euro leg was the original miss and it generalises.

Fairman's short quote in the thread is a reminder that context vanishes in replies. I keep the blackout times on the night sheet so I am not reconstructing the plan from a partial forum line at 07:50.

Spread snapping back early is not enough on its own. A fast recovery after a 40 pip impulse has trapped me into the next leg more than once, so I still wait for that M15 close.

Do you apply the same dual calendar to gold on US GDP days, or is metals a different blackout logic for you?
