By sunset, Thok was lying in the dirt, completely paralyzed by a severe lumbar sprain.

Grug wiped the sweat from his forehead, looking at the massive pile of heavy rocks. The Gold Standard had solved inflation, but the friction of physical settlement was atrocious. It was dangerous to move, expensive to verify, and incredibly heavy.

Ugg rubbed his chin, looking at his new cave, then back at the heavy pile of rocks.

"This is stupid," Ugg grunted. "Ugg’s new cave is very secure. It has a heavy boulder door. Why don't everyone just put their heavy Yellow Rocks in Ugg's secure cave? You leave them there. Ugg will give you a light, easy-to-carry piece of bark that says 'Ugg owes you one Yellow Rock.' You just trade the bark."

Grug’s eyes went wide. He looked at Ugg. He looked at the heavy gold. He looked at the piece of bark in Ugg's hand.

"Ugg," Grug whispered in horror. "If you hold all the rocks... and we only trade the paper receipts... what is to stop you from writing more receipts than you have rocks?"

Ugg smiled a slow, incredibly dangerous smile. "Why would Ugg do that? Ugg is trustworthy."

Part 42: The Goldsmith's Tale (Fractional Reserve Banking)

Thok was lying face-down on a heated slab of limestone, groaning in agony while a healer rubbed pungent pine sap into his lower back.

The Gold Standard had cured the valley’s hyperinflation, but it had created a massive orthopedic crisis. Shiny Yellow Rocks were incredibly heavy, and moving them across the valley to settle trades was causing a spike in severe spinal injuries.

To save their vertebrae, the tribe had enthusiastically adopted Ugg’s solution.

Ugg’s new commercial cave was a fortress. It had a single entrance blocked by a boulder so large only Ugg and Thok could move it. Ugg was now the valley’s official Custodian. Traders deposited their heavy gold rocks into Ugg’s vault. In exchange, Ugg gave them a lightweight, square piece of dried birch bark stamped with his thumbprint in permanent blackberry juice.

The text on the bark was simple: Ugg owes bearer one Shiny Yellow Rock.

"It is a technological marvel, Thok," Grug said, examining an 'Ugg-Note' by the fire. "It has the hard-money scarcity of gold, but the lightweight portability of a leaf. We have achieved monetary perfection."

Cave Street flourished. Traders zipped around, exchanging Ugg-Notes effortlessly. Nobody actually wanted the heavy rocks anymore; the bark was just so much easier.

Inside the vault, however, Ugg was getting bored.

He sat on a pile of furs, staring at exactly one thousand Shiny Yellow Rocks stacked neatly against the wall. It was the entire circulating supply of the valley’s wealth.

Ugg noticed a pattern. Every day, maybe ten people came in to redeem their bark for physical rocks (usually foreigners from the High Valleys who didn't trust paper). And every day, about ten other people came in to deposit new rocks.

The net outflow was essentially zero.

"Nine hundred and ninety rocks," Ugg whispered to himself, his deep voice echoing in the cavern. "They just sit there. Nobody ever asks for them. They only trade the bark."

A dark, incredibly profitable realization washed over the giant Market Maker.

Later that afternoon, Borg entered the vault. Borg had recently lost all his money (again) betting on the speed of a three-legged goat, and he was desperate.

"Ugg," Borg pleaded, wringing his hands. "Borg needs a loan. Give Borg ten Ugg-Notes. Borg will pay you back twelve next month!"

Ugg looked at Borg. Ugg did not own any of the gold in the vault. He was just guarding it. Ethically, he could not lend out Lom’s or Zog’s rocks.

But Ugg realized he didn't need to give Borg rocks. He just needed to give him bark.

Ugg grabbed a stack of blank birch bark, dipped his thumb in blackberry juice, and stamped ten brand new Ugg-Notes out of thin air. He handed them to Borg.

"Here is loan," Ugg smiled warmly.

Borg cheered, grabbed the unbacked paper, and ran out to buy premium spears.

Ugg leaned back, his mind expanding into the stratosphere of high finance. He had just created purchasing power from absolutely nothing, and he was charging interest on it. Because nobody ever demanded the physical gold all at once, his fake receipts were completely indistinguishable from the real ones.

The Fractional Reserve era had begun.

Over the next month, Cave Street experienced an economic boom that defied the laws of physics.

Borg bought a luxury cave. Lom expanded his fish stand into a massive, multi-stall seafood empire. The Chief took out a massive loan to build a monument to himself.

Credit was flowing everywhere. Ugg was stamping blackberry thumbprints faster than his thumb could heal.

Grug, however, was sitting on his boulder, aggressively doing math with a piece of charcoal.

"Thok," Grug said, his brow furrowed so deeply it looked like a trench. "How many Shiny Yellow Rocks did you and the miners pull out of the tunnel?"

"Thok count every single one," Thok grunted from his massage slab. "Exactly one thousand rocks."

"Okay," Grug said, tapping his charcoal. "But I just counted the circulating money supply. I observed Borg buying a mammoth, Lom buying a fleet of canoes, and the Chief buying a statue. I estimate there are at least five thousand Ugg-Notes circulating in the market."

Grug stared at the numbers. The math was impossible.

Grug sprinted across the valley and burst into Ugg’s vault. Ugg was currently stamping a fresh batch of bark for a new real estate development.

"Ugg!" Grug yelled, pointing an accusatory finger. "You are counterfeiting! There are five thousand receipts in the market, but only one thousand rocks in this cave!"

Ugg did not look panicked. He looked like a sophisticated central banker.

"It is not counterfeiting, Grug," Ugg explained calmly, placing his blackberry-stained thumb on a rag. "It is the money multiplier effect. Ugg maintains a prudent twenty-percent reserve ratio. It provides essential liquidity to a growing economy."

"It's a fraud!" Grug shrieked. "You are lending out gold that does not exist! If even a fraction of the valley comes to redeem their bark, you will default!"

"But they won't," Ugg smiled, a patronizing, institutional smile. "Because everyone trusts Ugg. Confidence is the collateral."

Grug turned around and walked straight out of the vault. He walked to the center of Cave Street. He climbed onto the highest rock he could find.

"THE VAULT IS EMPTY!" Grug screamed at the top of his lungs. "UGG DOES NOT HAVE THE ROCKS! THE BARK IS A LIE!"

The trading floor froze.

Borg, who was mid-bite into an expensive piece of tuna, dropped his fish. Lom dropped his abacus. The music (a guy hitting a log with a stick) stopped.

"What Grug mean?" Borg asked, looking at the massive stack of Ugg-Notes in his hand.

"I mean there are five paper receipts for every one physical rock!" Grug yelled. "If you are the last one to the vault, your paper is worthless!"

A terrifying, silent realization rippled through the crowd.

Panic is not a slow process. It is instantaneous.

"MY ROCKS!" Borg shrieked, sprinting toward Ugg’s cave.

"LOM'S ROCKS!" Lom yelled, abandoning his fish stand and tackling Borg to get ahead of him.

The first Bank Run in human history was a brutal, physical stampede. Two hundred terrified cavemen charged Ugg’s vault, waving their birch bark receipts, screaming for their shiny yellow rocks.
