He walked up to Borg, who was currently covered head-to-toe in pink feathers, looking like an incredibly angry flamingo.

"Hello, Borg," Grug smiled. "The fad is over. I will take one hundred feathers off your hands. One berry each."

Borg did not blink. "Price is fifty berries."

Grug laughed. "Fifty berries? For a feather? Don't be ridiculous, Borg. The intrinsic value is zero."

"Market can stay stupid longer than Grug can stay alive," Borg replied, crossing his arms.

Grug felt a slight twinge of panic. He looked around. Everyone was wearing pink feathers. No one was selling. The liquidity had completely dried up.

"Fine," Grug gritted his teeth. "Two berries."

"One hundred berries," Borg countered.

"Wait, you just said fifty!" Grug yelled.

"Price just went up," Borg smiled. "Granite Hands."

Grug looked at the sun. It was touching the mountain peaks. Ugg was sharpening his club nearby, glaring at Grug and tapping his wrist (where a watch would be, if time had been invented).

Grug was trapped.

"Okay, okay! Ten berries!" Grug shouted, throwing a sack of berries on the ground. He bought ten feathers.

But by executing that trade, Grug actively moved the market price against himself.

"Last traded price is ten!" Lom shouted. "My feathers now cost twenty!"

"Twenty?!" Grug shrieked. But he had no choice. He bought ten more at twenty berries.

The feedback loop was vicious. Every time Grug bought to cover his short, he drove the price higher. It was a Short Squeeze of epic proportions. The bid-ask spread was a weapon, and Borg was wielding it like a club.

"Fifty berries!"
"Eighty berries!"
"One hundred and fifty berries!"

Grug was running frantically between his cave and the trading floor, dragging every single berry, stick, and shell he had ever accumulated. He was weeping openly.

As the sun finally dipped below the horizon, Grug handed Borg his last premium pointy stick to buy the one hundredth feather.

Grug collapsed in the dirt in front of Ugg, handing over the sack of pink fluff. He was completely, utterly bankrupt. His entire net worth had been transferred to Borg and the retail crowd.

Borg stood over him, looking like a ridiculously wealthy, fluffy pink overlord.

"What did we learn, Grug?" Borg asked smugly.

Grug stared blankly at the dirt, his mind reeling from the mathematics of his destruction.

"When you buy a rock," Grug whispered, his voice hollow, "the most you can lose is the price of the rock. It goes to zero. Your loss is capped."

He looked up at Borg’s terrifying pink plumage.

"But when you short a feather... and the crowd refuses to sell... the price can go to infinity. My upside was one thousand berries. My downside... was everything."

The valley had just discovered the infinite risk of the naked short. It was a beautiful, devastating equalizer. But the sheer volatility of the Meme Feather event had shaken the Chief to his core. The market was completely out of control. It was time for government intervention.

Part 33: The SEC (Saber-cat Eating Committee)

Grug was back where he started: sitting in the dirt, entirely bankrupt, eating a bruised, second-hand berry.

The Meme Feather Short Squeeze had completely redistributed the valley’s wealth. Borg, the new retail kingpin, was currently lounging on a makeshift litter carried by Lom and Thok, fanned with the very pink Dodo feathers that had destroyed Grug’s portfolio.

But the chaotic wealth transfer had deeply unsettled the valley's ultimate authority.

The Chief waddled onto Cave Street, flanked by two massive guards holding unusually sharp spears. The Chief looked at Borg’s ridiculous pink plumage, then at Grug’s destitute state, and finally at the Magic Wall, which was currently covered in erratic, nonsensical fat-torch charts

"Market is broken!" the Chief bellowed, silencing the trading floor. "Tribe is not hunting! Tribe is not gathering! Tribe is just trading fluffy bird hair! Yesterday, a man tried to pay Chief's tribute with a pink feather. Chief cannot eat pink feather. Chief is angry!"

The crowd gulped. An angry Chief usually meant a lower tribal headcount.

"Cave Street is too dangerous," the Chief decreed, his voice echoing off the limestone. "People losing caves. People getting rich on fluff. It threatens the stability of the Chief's digestion. Therefore, Chief is implementing... Regulation."

Grug perked up, rubbing his bruised forehead. "Regulation? What kind of regulation?"

The Chief signaled to his guards, who dragged a large, terrifying wooden cage onto the trading floor. Inside the cage, a captured Saber-toothed cat paced angrily, growling and flashing teeth the size of stalactites.

"Chief establishes the SEC," the Chief announced proudly. "The Saber-cat Eating Committee."

A collective gasp echoed across the valley.

"The SEC is here to protect you from yourselves," the Chief explained. "From now on, the SEC dictates who can trade, what can be traded, and how fast you can trade it. If you break the rules of the SEC, you are fed to the Saber-cat. For your own protection."

Ugg, the giant Market Maker, was immediately deputized as the SEC Chairman. He was handed a badge made of a polished turtle shell. Ugg grinned; he loved having absolute authority with zero oversight.

"Rule Number One!" Chairman Ugg roared. "The Pattern Dirt-Trader Rule! The SEC notices that poor cavemen lose too many sticks trying to trade fast. To protect poor cavemen, you cannot day-trade unless you already have... twenty-five thousand sticks in your account!"

Grug leaped to his feet. "Twenty-five thousand?! Ugg, if I had twenty-five thousand sticks, I wouldn't need to day trade! You are just locking poor people out of the market!"

"It is for Grug's safety," Ugg nodded sagely. "Grug is protected from volatility by being permanently poor."

"Rule Number Two!" the Chief shouted. "The Accredited Caveman Rule! Only rich people are allowed to buy new, risky assets. If you do not own at least three mammoths and a premium cave, you cannot buy anything except boring, slow-growth pinecones."

Borg, from his litter, cheered. "Borg likes this rule! Borg has many sticks! Borg is Accredited!"

Grug gritted his teeth. "This doesn't protect retail investors! It just restricts the best opportunities to the incumbents! You are building a moat around your own wealth!"

The Saber-cat roared loudly in its cage. Grug decided to lower his voice.

Desperate to simply eat lunch, Grug pulled a beautifully carved bone out of his pouch. He had spent the morning whittling it into a perfect fish-hook. He walked over to Lom.

"Lom," Grug whispered. "I will trade you this premium fish-hook for one small piece of dried meat."
