Panic ensued. The arrow swung violently back to Extreme Fear.

Grug sat on his boulder, munching on the cheap steaks he had bought during the last panic, perfectly calm.

"It's a beautiful pendulum, Thok," Grug sighed, watching the chaos. "The market is just a machine that transfers wealth from the impatient to the patient. And the dial tells us exactly when everyone is about to do something stupid."

Part 30: The FOMO Rally

Cave Street was experiencing a period of unprecedented, agonizing boredom.

The Fear and Greed Index was pegged dead center at "Neutral." The weather was mild. The mammoth herds were stable. The price of a pointy stick had been exactly two berries for a week. There was no volatility, which meant there was no opportunity.

Then, a wanderer from the Deep Southern Caves arrived.

He didn't bring meat, or pelts, or tools. He brought a rock. But it wasn't a normal rock. It was a hollow stone cracked in half, filled with jagged, glittering purple crystals. It was an amethyst geode.

"What is that?" Lom asked, peering at it.

"It is a Magic Purple Rock," the wanderer said mysteriously. "It does... absolutely nothing. But look how it sparkles in the firelight!"

Lom, who was easily distracted by shiny objects, traded a half-eaten fish for the geode. He sat by the Big Fire, turning it over in his hands. It did sparkle beautifully.

Ugg walked by, stopped, and stared. Ugg liked things that sparkled. "Ugg give Lom two fish for Purple Rock."

Lom blinked. He had just doubled his investment in three minutes. "Deal!"

The transaction was witnessed by the entire trading floor. A 100% return on an asset with zero intrinsic value.

"I have five more!" the wanderer announced, pulling more geodes from his pouch.

Cave Street woke up. Thok bought one for three fish. Borg, who had recently managed to upgrade his living situation from a drafty pine tree to a small mud hut, mortgaged his hut to Ugg to borrow five fish, buying a geode at a massive premium.

By sunset, Borg sold his geode to a terrified, late-to-the-party hunter for ten fish. Borg bought his mud hut back and kept the profit.

The valley had discovered the Greater Fool Theory: it doesn't matter if an asset is completely useless, as long as you can sell it to a greater fool for a higher price tomorrow.

The next morning, the price of a Magic Purple Rock opened at fifteen fish.

Grug stood by the Magic Wall, moving the arrow of the Fear and Greed Index. He pushed it past "Greed," past "Extreme Greed," and pinned it violently to the far right edge of the board.

"Listen to me!" Grug shouted from his boulder. "This is a bubble! The Purple Rock is a terrible asset class! You can't eat it! If you try to smash a bone with it, the crystals shatter! It is heavy, fragile, and useless! It has negative utility!"

"Grug is just angry because Grug has no Purple Rock!" Borg yelled back, currently wearing three geodes on a vine necklace like Pleistocene bling. "Purple Rock is going to the High Peak! Purple Rock is the new Hard Money!"

"It's a rock!" Grug shrieked.

But logic has no place in a FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) rally. By noon, the price hit thirty fish. By mid-afternoon, it was trading for an unprecedented fifty fish per rock.

People were trading their life savings, their winter reserves, and their premium hunting gear for a piece of shiny gravel. They were getting obscenely rich on paper—or rather, on cave-drawings.

Grug sat on his boulder, isolated and alone. He looked at his fundamentals. He had a solid inventory of sticks. He had Longy, his value-investing mammoth. He was safe.

But as he watched Lom strut past, casually eating a premium mammoth steak paid for by geode-profits, a dark, toxic emotion began to poison Grug’s rational mind.

It was the psychological torture of the sideline observer. It is one thing to lose money; it is entirely another to watch your mathematically inferior friends get wildly rich doing something incredibly stupid.

The price hit eighty fish.

Grug’s eye began to twitch. The FOMO was scratching at the back of his skull.

Maybe it is the new currency, a voice whispered in his head. Maybe the fundamentals have changed. If I just buy one now at eighty, I can sell it to Ugg at a hundred. I'll just ride the momentum and get out before the crash.

The price hit ninety fish.

Grug couldn't take it anymore. The pain of missing out was physically hurting his chest. He snapped.

"THOK!" Grug screamed, leaping off his boulder. He sprinted to his cave and grabbed his emergency pouch—his ultimate reserve of twelve Hard Money Shells. He ran back to the trading floor, his eyes wide, drool forming at the corner of his mouth.

"I am buying the Purple Rock!" Grug roared, waving his Shells frantically. "Give me the rock! Take my wealth! I want the sparkles! I am riding this to the glacier!"

Thok, who was standing near the fire, saw Grug charging toward the wanderer. Thok saw the wild, emotional desperation in his mentor's eyes.

And Thok remembered the protocol from Part 28.

If I ever lose a trade, get angry, and immediately try to execute a new trade just to 'win it back'...

Well, Grug wasn't trying to win it back. But he was definitely trading with his emotions. He was violating his own core thesis.

Thok calmly picked up the thick, heavy oak Stop-Loss branch.

As Grug lunged forward to hand his life savings to the wanderer for a useless rock, Thok stepped into the gap and swung the oak branch with the force of a prehistoric Babe Ruth.

WHACK.

The stick connected perfectly with Grug’s forehead.

Grug’s eyes rolled back in his head. His arms dropped. He collapsed into the snow, completely unconscious, still clutching his Hard Money Shells.

"Thok executed protocol," Thok grunted proudly, standing over his fallen boss.

Ten minutes later, Grug woke up. His head was throbbing with a heartbeat of pure agony. He groaned, sitting up and rubbing the massive, swelling lump on his forehead.

"What... what happened?" Grug slurred.

Thok pointed to the trading floor.
