Borg, who was trying to buy the pelts Lom had just thrown in the air, saw Ugg run. If Ugg was running, Borg wasn't going to stick around to ask questions. Borg dropped his Shells and fled.

Within exactly three seconds, a thriving, highly liquid market turned into a ghost town.

But the assets didn't run away. The assets just fell to the floor.

Grug, sitting safely atop his high boulder, watched the carnage unfold. He didn't run. Partly because he had a good vantage point and could clearly see it was just a squirrel, but mostly because he was witnessing a terrifying financial anomaly.

Prices didn't just go down. They ceased to exist.

A moment ago, a pointy stick was worth two berries. Now, thirty pointy sticks were lying in the dirt, completely abandoned. Their value was effectively zero, because there was no bid.

"The bids!" Grug whispered, dropping his berries. "The bids have evaporated!"

It was a Flash Crash. A cascading liquidity failure triggered by a false signal.

Grug realized he had a microscopic window of opportunity. The market was completely decoupled from reality. The fundamental value of a pointy stick hadn't changed—you still needed it to hunt—but the traded price was currently zero.

Grug scrambled down from his boulder. He was the only liquidity provider left in the valley.

He ran to Ugg's abandoned pile of thirty sticks. He didn't have to buy them; he just had to claim them. He scooped them up. He ran to Lom's abandoned pelts. He grabbed those too. He scooped up Thok’s berries.

For two glorious minutes, Grug owned the entire global economy for the price of bending over.

Then, the squirrel ran out of the clearing, chattering angrily.

Lom, huddling behind a rock, peaked out. He didn't see a wolf. He touched his ear. It was a tiny bite.

"Is... is squirrel," Lom announced weakly.

Ugg poked his head out of his cave. He looked around. No wolf.

Slowly, the traders crept back onto the floor. Their adrenaline faded, replaced immediately by the realization that they had dropped all their capital in the dirt.

They rushed back to their trading spots.

"Where my sticks?" Ugg bellowed, looking at the empty patch of dirt where his inventory had been.

"Where my pelts?" Lom cried.

Grug was sitting back on his boulder. He was now surrounded by a mountain of sticks, pelts, and berries. He looked down at the angry, confused mob.

"Welcome back to Cave Street, gentlemen," Grug said smoothly, resting his chin on his hands. "The market has reopened. And due to recent volatility, the spread has widened significantly. I am currently asking five berries for a pointy stick. Any takers?"

Ugg glared at Grug. He hefted his club. "Grug steal Ugg's sticks."

"I didn't steal them, Ugg," Grug corrected gently. "You liquidated your position at a market price of zero. I simply stepped in to provide liquidity during a crisis. I bought the dip."

Ugg grunted. He couldn't argue with the logic, even if he wanted to smash the logician. The rules of Cave Street were absolute. If it's on the floor, it's in play.

Grug had survived the Flash Crash and made a fortune. But as he looked at the resentful faces of his fellow traders, he realized that transparency was becoming a liability. If everyone could see every trade, they could see exactly how much money he was making off their panic.

He needed a place to trade where Ugg couldn't see the order book.

Part 19: Dark Pools

Cave Street had a transparency problem.

The fat-torch charts on the limestone wall were great for retail traders like Thok, but they were a nightmare for institutional investors. Whenever a "whale" wanted to make a large move, the public order book immediately worked against them.

Case in point: Lom the Mud-Person had experienced an unprecedented bumper crop of berries. He had five massive baskets of them—enough to feed the valley for a month. But Lom wasn't stupid. He knew if he dragged five baskets to the Big Fire, Ugg would instantly see the massive influx of supply and drop the bid price to zero.

"If I show my hand, the market fronts-runs me," Lom whispered to Grug, hiding behind a large boulder just outside the trading floor. "Ugg will squeeze me. I need to offload these berries without moving the global price."

Grug stroked his chin. Lom was talking about a block trade. If they executed it on the lit exchange of Cave Street, it would crash the berry market. They needed off-exchange liquidity. They needed secrecy.

"Follow me," Grug said softly.

He led Lom away from the bright, noisy trading floor, down a steep, treacherous path toward the river, and behind a partially frozen waterfall. Behind the curtain of ice lay a deep, damp limestone cavern. The floor was a shallow basin of freezing, pitch-black water. There was almost no light.

"Where are we?" Lom shivered, his voice echoing in the gloom.

"This," Grug announced, splashing into the ankle-deep water, "is the Dark Pool. It is an alternative trading system. No yelling. No fat-torch charts. Absolute anonymity."

Lom clutched his baskets. "Who is going to buy berries in a dark, freezing puddle?"

"The people who don't want Ugg to know they are buying berries," Grug smiled.

Grug left Lom in the cave and quietly returned to Cave Street. He found Borg, who had just acquired a massive pile of pointy sticks from a successful pine-whittling marathon. Borg wanted berries, but if he started buying heavily on the open market, the price of berries would skyrocket.

Grug leaned in and whispered in Borg’s ear. "I have off-market liquidity. Massive volume. Fixed price. Follow me."

Ten minutes later, Borg was standing in the freezing water of the Dark Pool, barely able to see his own hand in front of his face.

"Are you there, counterparty?" Borg whispered into the darkness.

"I am here," Lom whispered back from the shadows.

"I represent a significant quantity of pointy sticks," Borg murmured.

"I am holding substantial berry volume," Lom replied.
