Part 16: The Elder Advisor (EA)

Cave Street had a new problem: the market was too emotional.

When the sun was shining, everyone wanted to buy. When a cloud covered the sun, everyone panic-sold. The introduction of the scarce, deflationary Shell currency had only made things worse. Traders were either hoarding their shells like dragons or recklessly gambling them away on rumors of a sick mammoth.

Grug was exhausted. He was spending fourteen hours a day on his boulder, manually executing trades, trying to keep track of the spread, and constantly yelling at Ugg to stop threatening the borrowers. He was losing sleep. He was developing a twitch in his left eye. He needed a system that traded without emotion, without fatigue, and without requiring Grug to stand in the freezing wind all day.

He needed algorithmic trading.

He found his solution in the darkest, warmest corner of the communal cave: Elder Oob.

Elder Oob was the oldest man in the tribe. He was approximately forty-two years old, which in Pleistocene years meant he was practically immortal. Oob was mostly blind, almost entirely deaf, and spent 90% of his day sleeping. He had survived the ice age not through strength, but through a terrifying lack of reaction to anything.

"Oob," Grug said gently, poking the sleeping elder with a stick.

Oob opened one cloudy eye. "Oob want porridge."

"I will give you premium porridge, Oob," Grug promised. "But I need you to do a job. I need you to be my Expert Advisor. My... EA."

Oob chewed on his gums. "Oob not expert. Oob just tired."

"Exactly!" Grug exclaimed. "You have zero emotional investment in the market! You don't care about the Mammoth Market or the Sabertooth Market! You just want porridge!"

Grug spent the next three hours explaining the parameters of his new trading algorithm to Oob. It was a simple, rule-based system based entirely on tactile feedback, since Oob couldn't see the charts.

"Okay, let's review," Grug said, pacing in front of Oob's sleeping mat. "If someone places a Shell in your left hand, what do you do?"

"Oob give them three pointy sticks from the pile on the left," Oob mumbled, closing his eyes again.

"Yes! Perfect execution. And if they place two premium fish in your right hand?"

"Oob give them one pointy stick from the pile on the right."

"Flawless logic!" Grug cheered. "And what if Ugg yells at you that the market is crashing and you need to sell everything for half price?"

Oob snored softly.

"Exactly!" Grug pumped his fist. "Zero panic! Absolute adherence to the algorithm!"

Grug set up Elder Oob near the Big Fire with two distinct piles of inventory (sticks and fish) and a small wooden bowl for collecting Shells. He hung a sign above Oob that read (in crude charcoal drawings): "AUTOMATED MARKET MAKER. NO YELLING. NO EMOTION. JUST TRADE."

Grug then retreated to his cave to finally get some sleep, leaving his EA to run the portfolio.

For the first two days, the Elder Advisor was a massive success.

Thok would walk up, place a Shell in Oob's left hand, and Oob, without opening his eyes, would blindly hand over three sticks. The execution was slow, but it was incredibly reliable. There was no slippage. There was no spread-widening based on fear. Oob traded with the cold, mechanical precision of a man who literally could not care less if the world ended.

Grug woke up on the third day feeling refreshed and wealthy. He strolled down to the trading floor to check his automated profits.

He found a crowd gathered around Oob’s station.

Ugg was standing in front of Oob, laughing uproariously. "Watch this!" Ugg bellowed to the crowd.

Ugg stepped up to the sleeping Elder. Instead of placing a Shell in Oob’s left hand, Ugg placed a very small, perfectly smooth, entirely worthless river pebble into Oob's left hand.

Because Oob was blind and his hands were calloused from forty years of survival, he couldn't feel the difference in texture or weight.

The algorithm triggered.

"Oob receive Shell," Oob mumbled happily. He blindly reached over to the left pile and handed Ugg three premium pointy sticks.

The crowd gasped, then erupted into cheers.

"Infinite sticks glitch!" Lom yelled, sprinting to the river to grab a handful of pebbles.

Grug pushed through the crowd, horrified. "Stop! Halt trading! The EA is glitching!"

But he was too late. The algorithm was executing trades at maximum efficiency based on faulty input data. Borg handed Oob a piece of dried mud, and Oob handed him three sticks. Thok gave Oob a dead beetle, and Oob handed him three sticks.

By the time Grug physically tackled the sleeping Elder to stop the trades, his entire inventory of pointy sticks was gone, replaced by a wooden bowl full of pebbles, mud, and dead bugs.

Oob woke up slightly as Grug tackled him. "Oob do good? Oob get porridge now?"

Grug sat in the dirt, surrounded by his worthless pebble-profits. He had learned the harsh reality of algorithmic trading: an EA is perfectly obedient, but it is also perfectly stupid. If you feed it garbage data, it will execute garbage trades with terrifying efficiency, right until it bankrupts you.

"No porridge, Oob," Grug sighed, rubbing his temples. "We have to go back to manual trading. But first... I need a way to stop myself from losing everything when the market turns."

Part 17: Stop-Loss

After the disastrous Elder Advisor experiment, Grug was forced back into the trading pits, trading manually. He was exhausted, paranoid, and emotionally compromised.

This led to the most dangerous psychological trap in finance: bag-holding.

A traveling merchant from the Deep Caves had arrived, selling a highly speculative asset: Fermented Mammoth Milk. It was kept in sealed gourds and was said to give the drinker "visions of wealth" (which was mostly just severe food poisoning).

Grug, desperate to recoup his pebble-losses, bought heavily on margin. He purchased ten gourds at five pointy sticks each.

For an hour, the market rallied. Ugg bought a gourd, drank it, yelled at a tree for twenty minutes, and declared it the greatest drink ever. The price spiked to seven sticks.

"Sell, Grug!" Thok advised, chewing on a bone nearby. "Take profit!"

"No!" Grug scoffed, his eyes wide with greed. "The Mammoth Market is running! It will go to ten sticks! Twelve!"

Then, the merchant returned from the river with fifty more gourds. The supply instantly diluted the market. The price dropped to four sticks.

"Grug, sell now," Thok warned. "Small loss. Is okay."
