The Chief waddled out of his cave, looking bewildered. He tried to speak, but a yellow leaf blew directly into his mouth. He spat it out. "Tribe has much money now! Tribe is rich!"
"We aren't rich, you idiot!" Grug yelled, losing all respect for authority in the face of macroeconomic disaster. "Look around! We have mountains of money, but no one wants it! We are all leaf-billionaires, but we are starving!"
Borg, who had tried to trade a pointy stick for a thousand leaves, realized he couldn't physically carry a thousand leaves back to his cave. "Money too heavy!" Borg complained. "Need wheelbarrow!" (Borg hadn't invented the wheelbarrow yet, but the necessity was becoming painfully obvious).
The system had collapsed entirely. People stopped trading. They went back to hunting, ignoring the ankle-deep piles of "money" that littered the valley. Cave Street was dead, buried under a golden pile of fiat failure.

Re: Ice Age trading epic Story
Grug sat on his rock, clutching a handful of useless yellow leaves. He had survived the margin call. He had survived the blizzard. But he couldn't survive the autumn.
He looked at the leaves. Then he threw them into the Big Fire, where they crackled and burned, providing a momentary burst of warmth—their only remaining utility.
"We need a new system," Grug muttered, staring into the flames. "We need something the Chief cannot print. Something the wind cannot blow into the valley. We need... hard money."

Part 15: Hard Money
The Great Leaf Inflation of September had left Cave Street in ruins. Trust in the financial system was entirely broken. If a man tried to offer a leaf for a fish, he was immediately beaten with the fish.
The valley had reverted to pure barter, but the barter problem remained exactly as Grug had first discovered it: dragging heavy rocks to Ugg's cave was exhausting, and half the time Ugg just wanted pointy sticks anyway.
Grug needed a new currency. It had to meet three strict criteria:
It had to be durable (unlike berries).
It had to be portable (unlike grinding rocks).
It had to be incredibly scarce, so the Chief couldn't just pick it off a tree and ruin the economy.

Re: Ice Age trading epic Story
Grug spent three days wandering the valley, searching. He looked at pinecones (too common). He looked at mammoth dung (durable, but frankly insulting).
Then, he wandered to the edge of the deep, fast-flowing river at the base of the mountains. He waded into the freezing water, shivering violently. He reached into the murky depths and pulled up a handful of riverbed.
Amidst the gray sludge and ordinary pebbles, something caught his eye.
It was small, perfectly smooth, and possessed a strange, pearlescent shimmer. It wasn't a rock. It was a rare, fossilized seashell from a time before the ice covered the land. Grug had lived in the valley his whole life and had only ever seen two of these in his existence.
It was beautiful. It was indestructible. And most importantly, finding one required freezing your toes off in the river for six hours. The "proof-of-work" was immense.

Re: Ice Age trading epic Story
Grug spent the next week dredging the freezing river. By the end of it, he had nearly caught pneumonia, but he possessed a leather pouch containing exactly twelve shiny, fossilized shells.
He marched back to Cave Street, coughing slightly but radiating confidence. He climbed onto his boulder.
"Attention!" Grug croaked, his voice raw. "The leaf is dead! Long live the Shell!"
He held up one shimmering, ancient shell. The firelight caught its pearlescent surface. It looked alien. It looked valuable.
The tribe gathered, skeptical. The Chief pushed his way to the front, looking annoyed. "What is this? New leaf? Chief did not authorize."

"It is not a leaf, Chief," Grug said, enjoying the rhyme. "It is Hard Money. Try to rip it."
Grug tossed the shell to Ugg. Ugg caught it in his massive paw and squeezed. Ugg's face turned red. Veins popped on his neck. The shell did not crack. Ugg grunted in surprise and handed it back. "Is strong."
"Very strong," Grug nodded. "And more importantly, Chief... try to find one."
The Chief looked around. "Where you get?"
"At the bottom of the freezing river, guarded by the snapping turtles," Grug lied slightly, adding the turtles for dramatic effect. "It took me a week to find twelve. You cannot print them. You cannot shake them from a tree. The supply is fixed. It is the ultimate store of value."
Thok stepped forward, eyeing the shell hungrily. "Thok like shiny. What it worth?"

Re: Ice Age trading epic Story
"That," Grug said, "is up to the market. I will open the bidding. I offer one Shell for... three premium mammoth steaks."
Ugg laughed. "Three steaks?! For tiny rock?!"
"It is not a rock, Ugg. It is portable wealth. Imagine carrying thirty steaks. You cannot. They rot. The wolves smell them. But you can carry the value of thirty steaks in this tiny pouch. When winter comes, and you need sticks from Borg, do you want to drag rotten meat to his cave? No. You give him the Shell."
Ugg stopped laughing. The logic was sound. And Ugg hated dragging things.
"Ugg give two steaks," Ugg countered, testing the market.

Re: Ice Age trading epic Story
"Sold," Grug said instantly. He tossed the shell to Ugg and accepted the meat.
The transaction was witnessed by everyone. The Shell had instantly acquired purchasing power.
Within an hour, the other eleven shells had entered circulation. Borg traded three pointy sticks for one. Lom gave up his entire berry harvest for two. The shells moved rapidly from hand to hand.
Because the shells were so scarce, nobody wanted to spend them on cheap things like a single fish. They became the currency of high-value transactions. They were the valley's gold standard.
Grug sat on his rock, eating Ugg's premium steak, watching the ecosystem heal. He had introduced scarcity back into the market. Prices stabilized. The inflation nightmare was over.
Cave Street was functioning perfectly.

Re: Ice Age trading epic Story
Until Grug noticed Ugg sitting near his cave, not hunting, not making markets, but staring intensely at his two shiny shells. Ugg was rubbing them together. He looked obsessed.
"Ugg," Grug called out. "Market is open. You want to buy sticks?"
Ugg didn't look up. "Ugg not spend Shells. Shells too pretty. Shells going to be worth four steaks tomorrow. Ugg just hold."

Re: Ice Age trading epic Story
Grug felt a cold chill that had nothing to do with the river. He had created a currency so desirable, so scarce, that people were refusing to spend it. They were hoarding it.
Grug had cured inflation, but he had just accidentally invented deflationary collapse.
