Lom, wearing nothing but a loincloth and sweating profusely, offered him half a crushed berry for the entire pile.

Grug stared at his portfolio. It was worthless. He had bought at the top, on leverage, in a suddenly bearish climate.

Then, a shadow fell over his boulder. It was large. It was muscular. It was carrying a very, very large club.

"Grug," Ugg rumbled, his voice low and vibrating with menace. "Ugg check the charts. Price of pelt is zero."

"Ugg, listen," Grug stammered, backing away slowly. "It's a temporary dip! A market correction! If we just hold—"

"Ugg not care about dip," Ugg interrupted. "Ugg look at his risk management protocol." Ugg tapped his club against his palm. Smack. "Protocol say: When collateral value drops below loan value... Ugg liquidate."

"A margin call?!" Grug shrieked. "You can't liquidate me now! I just need more time! If I hold until winter—"

"Winter is three moons away," Ugg said logically. "Ugg want sticks now. Or Ugg take Grug's cave. And Grug's winter berries. And Grug's favorite sleeping rock."

Ugg wasn't just threatening physical violence anymore; he was executing a hostile takeover of Grug's entire net worth.

Grug had thirty seconds to find ten sticks, or he was going to be homeless and kneecap-less. The leverage that had promised him a fortune was about to crush him faster than a falling glacier.

Part 11: Leverage

Ugg’s club was resting lightly on Grug’s shoulder. It felt like a medium-sized tree trunk. The margin call was not a suggestion; it was an impending physical event.

"Ten sticks," Ugg repeated. "Or Grug's cave belongs to Ugg."

Grug’s mind raced faster than a saber-cat chasing a slow gazelle. He looked around the sweltering trading floor. No one was buying pelts. He looked at Ugg’s massive, impatient face.

Then, he looked at a very large, incredibly heavy boulder sitting uselessly near the edge of the clearing. It was one of the premium grinding rocks Grug used to sell before he discovered finance. It was currently blocking the main path to the river.

"Ugg," Grug said, his voice squeaking slightly. "I do not have ten sticks. But... I have an infrastructural problem that only your massive capital can solve."

Ugg frowned. "Capital?"

"Strength," Grug corrected quickly. He pointed to the boulder. "That rock is blocking the path to the river. The tribe is thirsty. It is a public nuisance. If someone were to move it, the Chief would surely reward them with... say, twenty sticks from the communal treasury."

Ugg squinted at the boulder. "Ugg can lift rock. Ugg is strong." He took a step toward it, then stopped. "Wait. Rock is very big. Even Ugg might hurt back. Ugg need to preserve core strength for market making."

"Exactly!" Grug cried, sensing his opening. "Direct application of capital—I mean, strength—is inefficient! You need... Leverage."

Ugg looked confused. "Ugg margin call Grug. Now Grug talk about leverage again?"

"A different kind of leverage," Grug explained, running over to a nearby dead pine tree. The trunk was long, straight, and incredibly sturdy. He dragged it over to the boulder.

Next, Grug found a smaller, wedge-shaped rock—a fulcrum. He shoved the small rock close to the boulder, then jammed the end of the long pine log under the boulder, resting the middle of the log on the small rock.

"Behold," Grug announced, stepping back. "Financial engineering in the physical realm."

Ugg stared at the setup. "Is just stick and rock."

"No, Ugg. It is a multiplier. Just as your ten sticks allowed me to buy ten pelts, this long stick will allow your strength to move that massive rock. The longer the stick, the less strength you need to apply. You are multiplying your effort."

Ugg approached the end of the log cautiously. "Ugg push here?"

"Push down," Grug instructed. "Gently."

Ugg placed his massive hands on the end of the log and pushed down. The log creaked. The fulcrum dug into the dirt. And slowly, miraculously, the massive boulder lifted an inch off the ground.

Ugg’s eyes widened in sheer childlike wonder. He pushed harder. The boulder lifted higher. With a final grunt, Ugg leaned his considerable weight onto the log, and the boulder tipped entirely over, rolling out of the path and into a ditch.

The path to the river was clear.

"Ugg move big rock!" Ugg cheered, holding up his hands. "Ugg is strongest!"

"No, Ugg," Grug corrected softly. "Leverage moved the big rock. You just provided the initial capital."

The Chief, having witnessed this feat of engineering, waddled over, wiping sweat from his brow. "Excellent work, Ugg. Path is clear. Tribe can drink. As reward, take these twenty sticks from the public reserve."

The Chief handed Ugg a bundle of twenty beautifully crafted sticks.

Ugg looked at the sticks. He looked at the log. He looked at Grug.

Grug smiled weakly. "So... about my margin call? My ten sticks? Since I provided the advisory services and the structural framework for your recent windfall..."

Ugg grunted, doing some very slow mental arithmetic. He had lent Grug ten sticks. Grug had lost them. But Grug had just shown him how to turn a tree branch into twenty sticks without breaking a sweat. The consulting fee was arguably worth the write-off.

Ugg tossed ten sticks at Grug's feet. "Margin call cancelled. Grug's cave is safe. But Ugg keep the log."

Grug scooped up the sticks, his heart pounding with relief. He had survived the margin call not by paying his debts, but by refinancing them through a massive public works project and a rudimentary understanding of physics.

He wiped his brow. "Thank you, Ugg. The log is all yours."

Ugg immediately began dragging the heavy pine log toward his own cave. "Ugg going to use leverage to move Ugg's pelt throne closer to fire," he muttered happily.
