Ugg slowly picked up his massive club and rested it on his shoulder. He stared at Thok with dead, unblinking eyes. "Ugg bid two berries. Ugg is providing liquidity. Take two berries or Ugg provide liquidity to Thok's face."

Thok gulped and handed over the fish for two berries.

An hour later, Lom arrived, craving fish. He approached Ugg. "Ugg! Me need fish! Will pay three berries!"

Ugg shook his head. "Ugg ask four berries. That is the spread. Ugg take risk holding stinky fish. Four berries."

Lom complained, but he was hungry, and no one else had fish. He paid the four berries.

Grug watched from his boulder, beaming with pride. It was a beautiful, terrible system. Ugg had instantly created a functioning, highly liquid market, entirely backed by the threat of blunt-force trauma. The spread was completely artificial, the prices were monopolized, and Ugg was getting ridiculously wealthy without hunting a single mammoth.

Wall Street had officially arrived in the Pleistocene.

Part 8: Scalping the Freeze

With Ugg providing terrifying, club-enforced liquidity, Cave Street was booming again. The market was flowing. The spreads were wide, but transactions were happening.

Grug, however, was getting bored.

Collecting a berry here and a bite of fish there for standing on his rock was safe, but it was slow. He watched the fat-torch charts on the wall. The price of mammoth meat, the valley's blue-chip asset, moved sluggishly. It might go up one berry over three days, or down half a stick over a week. It was a boomer market. Grug wanted action. Grug wanted alpha.

He needed a highly volatile asset. Something that changed value so rapidly you could get rich—or ruined—in an afternoon.

He found it in the most unlikely place: the very edge of the Great Glacier.

It was mid-summer, a relatively balmy 35 degrees Fahrenheit. The edge of the glacier was slowly melting, revealing chunks of incredibly pure, crystal-clear ice. These weren't regular river ice chunks; these were ancient, pristine blocks that didn't taste like fish dung when you melted them for water. The tribe loved them.

But there was a catch. If you chipped off a block of Premium Glacier Ice, you had exactly two hours to get it back to the caves before it melted into a useless puddle.

The value of the ice was directly inversely correlated to its distance from the fire and the time of day. A massive block fresh off the glacier was worth one stick. Halfway to the caves, as it started dripping, it was worth two sticks. By the time it reached the Big Fire, if there was still enough left to chill a mammoth steak, a wealthy caveman like Ugg would pay five sticks for it.

But if you held it too long... it became zero.

It was the ultimate decaying asset.

Grug saw the opportunity immediately. He didn't want to drag the ice all the way from the glacier. He didn't want to wait for it to reach Ugg by the fire. He wanted to trade the micro-fluctuations in between.

He recruited his intern, Thok. "Thok," Grug said, handing him two pointy sticks. "Go halfway to the glacier. Wait for Borg to run past with a block of ice. Buy it from him."

Thok looked confused. "But ice is heavy. And wet."

"Exactly. Borg will be tired. He will be worried it is melting too fast. Offer him two sticks. He will take the guaranteed profit."

Grug sprinted a quarter-mile closer to the caves and waited behind a large rock.

Sure enough, twenty minutes later, Borg came jogging past, carrying a dripping, soccer-ball-sized chunk of premium ice. Borg was sweating and looked stressed.

Thok intercepted him. "Borg! Look tired. Ice melting. Give you two sticks right now."

Borg hesitated, looked at the dripping ice, then at the long walk ahead. He took the sticks and handed over the ice. He had doubled his initial investment (the time spent chipping it) without doing the hardest part of the walk.

Thok immediately ran the ice to where Grug was hiding behind the rock. Grug grabbed it. It was noticeably smaller now, but still substantial.

Grug didn't walk to the fire. He waited exactly three minutes until another caveman, Lom, came trudging along, looking parched.

"Lom!" Grug stepped out. "You look thirsty. I have Premium Glacier Ice. Not fully melted yet. Three sticks."

Lom, desperate for a cold drink without walking all the way to the glacier, paid the three sticks.

Grug had just made a one-stick profit in three minutes, without ever going near the glacier or the fire.

"This is it, Thok!" Grug yelled, his hands freezing cold but his heart racing. "High-Frequency Trading! We don't hold the asset. We don't care about the long-term fundamentals of the ice. We just buy the fear of melting, and sell the desperation for a drink!"

For the next three days, Grug and Thok became the undisputed kings of Ice Scalping. They set up a relay system. Buy from the tired harvesters, hold the ice for no more than ninety seconds, and flip it to the thirsty walkers a few yards down the trail.

They were making dozens of tiny trades a day, accumulating a massive stockpile of sticks and berries. They were scalping the spread on a literal melting asset.

But high-frequency trading requires perfect execution. And on Cave Street, execution was about to slip.

Part 9: Slippage

Grug and Thok were the masters of the Ice-Scalping relay. They had accumulated a small mountain of sticks, berries, and somewhat questionable fish simply by trading chunks of frozen water for ninety seconds at a time.

But success breeds imitation.

Ugg, the Market Maker, had noticed that fewer and fewer people were bringing Premium Glacier Ice all the way to his stall by the Big Fire. His monopoly on cold drinks was slipping. He watched Grug’s relay system from afar, his heavy brow furrowed in concentration.

"Grug make sticks fast," Ugg grunted to his own newly hired intern, a particularly dense caveman named Og. "We do same. But bigger."

The next morning, the High-Frequency Trading environment changed dramatically.

Borg came jogging down the path from the glacier, carrying a massive, pristine block of ice. Grug, hiding behind his usual rock, stepped out with two sticks. "Borg! Look tired. Ice melting. Give you two—"

Before Grug could finish, Ugg stepped out from behind a larger rock, accompanied by Og.

"Ugg give THREE sticks!" Ugg bellowed, his voice echoing across the tundra. "Ugg buy ice now!"

Borg, thrilled by the sudden bidding war, immediately handed the ice to Ugg.

Grug was stunned. The spread had just been crushed. The big institutional money had entered the micro-scalping game.
