"Because of psychology, Thok!" Grug shouted, perhaps a bit too passionately. "When everyone thinks stick will cost more tomorrow, they buy stick today! This creates a self-fulfilling prophecy of wealth! I call this... a Mammoth Market."
Ugg tilted his head. "Yesterday you call it 'Bear'. Now is Mammoth?"
"I rebranded," Grug said dismissively. "Bear is not dramatic enough. Think about the Mammoth, Ugg. It is massive. It moves slowly at first, but once the herd starts running, nothing can stop it. And how does a Mammoth attack? It lowers its head, catches you on its tusks, and throws you up."
Grug thrust his rib-bone pointer toward the ceiling. "Up! The Mammoth Market thrusts prices upward! In a Mammoth Market, everyone is a genius. You buy a stick, you sleep, you wake up, and the stick is worth two fish. The trend is your friend!"

The crowd cheered. The Mammoth Market was intoxicating. For a week, everyone on Cave Street bought everything they could get their hands on, assuming they could sell it to some other idiot for more berries tomorrow.
Then came Tuesday.
Grug walked to the wall that evening with a heavy heart and a large lump of red clay. He drew a massive, aggressive red rectangle. It wiped out three days of green Mammoth gains in a single, devastating stroke.
The next morning, the crowd stared at the red block in horrified silence.
"What happened to Mammoth?" Lom whimpered, clutching a basket of rapidly depreciating berries.

Grug sighed, leaning heavily on his pointer. "The Mammoth got tired, Lom. People realized they had five pointy sticks and no actual meat to eat. The buying stopped. And when the buying stops, the fear begins."
Grug tapped the giant red square. "When panic sets in, prices do not slowly walk down. They plummet. People dump their assets at any price just to get out. I call this... the Sabertooth Market."
The crowd gasped. The Sabertooth was the most terrifying creature in the valley.

"Exactly," Grug nodded grimly. "How does the Sabertooth attack? It leaps from a high place, sinks its fangs in, and drags its prey violently down to the ground. That is what happened to the price of sticks yesterday. The Sabertooth slashed the price from ten berries down to four."
Thok, trembling slightly, raised his hand. "But Grug... Thok bought sticks at nine berries. Thok thought Mammoth was still running. Thok tried to buy the dip."
Grug placed a comforting hand on Thok’s massive shoulder. "Trying to buy the dip in a Sabertooth Market is like trying to catch a falling spear with your face, Thok. You don't fight the Sabertooth. You play dead, or you run."
"So Thok is poor now?"

"Thok is highly illiquid," Grug corrected gently. "But you have learned the most valuable lesson of Cave Street."
Grug turned to the crowd, his voice booming over the wind. "The Mammoth takes the stairs up, my friends. But the Sabertooth... the Sabertooth jumps out the cave window!"
The tribe nodded solemnly. They had just experienced their first market correction. They were poorer, colder, and heavily over-leveraged in pine sticks, but they were finally learning how the game was played.

Part 7: Ugg the Market Maker
Cave Street was experiencing a liquidity crisis.
After the devastating Sabertooth Market of the previous week, everyone was terrified to trade. Thok was hoarding his remaining fish. Lom refused to cross the river with his berries. Borg sat by his fire, fiercely guarding a pile of thirty pointy sticks that nobody wanted to buy.
Grug stood on his boulder, trying to drum up volume. "Come on! Bid-ask! Who needs a pelt? Who has meat? Let's see some action!"
Nothing. The market had frozen solid, much like the actual river. When no one traded, Grug didn't collect his 'Because I Am Standing On The Big Rock' fees. He was getting hungry.
He needed someone to provide liquidity. He needed a Market Maker.

Re: Ice Age trading epic Story
He looked across the clearing at Ugg. Ugg was the strongest, richest caveman in the valley. He had a massive stockpile of meat, a mountain of heavy pelts, and a club the size of a small tree. Because he was so strong, he didn't need to hoard; he could always take what he wanted. He was the perfect candidate.
Grug approached Ugg, who was currently trying to use a premium grinding rock to crack open a walnut, completely misunderstanding its purpose.
"Ugg," Grug said, sitting down next to the giant. "You have much meat. You have many pelts. But you are not making them work for you."
Ugg smashed the walnut. It disintegrated into dust. He looked disappointed. "Meat work? Meat just sit there. Then Ugg eat it."

Re: Ice Age trading epic Story
"No, no," Grug explained patiently. "You could be the Market Maker. The cornerstone of Cave Street. When Thok wants to sell fish, but Borg doesn't want to buy fish, Thok gets sad. The market stops."
"Thok sad is funny," Ugg grunted.
"Yes, but if Thok cannot sell fish, Thok cannot buy Ugg's meat later. The velocity of money slows down," Grug said, using a phrase he had just invented and didn't entirely understand himself. "But... what if you always bought the fish?"
Ugg stopped chewing on a piece of walnut shell. "Why Ugg buy fish? Ugg has mammoth."

Re: Ice Age trading epic Story
"Because," Grug leaned in closely, "you buy the fish from Thok for very cheap—say, one stick. And because you are the only one buying, Thok has to accept it. Then, later, when Lom comes looking for fish, you sell it to Lom for two sticks. You are providing a service! You are providing liquidity!"
Ugg's thick brow furrowed as his brain strained against his skull. "Ugg... buy cheap... sell high?"
"Exactly! You provide a standing bid and a standing ask for every asset in the valley. You become the house."
Ugg liked the sound of that. "Ugg is house. Ugg is big house."

Re: Ice Age trading epic Story
The next day, Ugg set up his stall right next to Grug's boulder. He had a pile of sticks, a pile of berries, a pile of fish, and his massive club resting prominently on his lap.
When the market opened, Grug shouted, "Ugg the Market Maker is officially open for business! Guaranteed liquidity!"
Thok approached Ugg nervously. "Ugg... Thok have one fish. Need berries."
Ugg looked at the fish. He didn't want the fish. But he remembered Grug's words. "Ugg buy fish," Ugg grunted loudly so the whole clearing could hear. "Ugg bid two berries for fish. Ugg ask four berries for fish."
Thok blinked. "But yesterday fish was worth three berries."
