Prop translation for discretionary scalpers: case study style

Post by PropScalpDesk »

Last challenge I ran forced a translation exercise: take the London EURUSD playbook I use on personal capital and rewrite every rule so it still works under a daily loss limit and a news blackout.

Case study, not a firm review. Personal book: average 0.4R stop, three attempts in the first 90 minutes, OK to scratch and re-enter. Prop version: same stop distance, but two attempts max, and any second attempt only if the first was a clean process stop, not a revenge click. News: personal book lets me trade second-tier with half size; prop version is flat from fifteen minutes before Tier-1 until spread looks normal again.

What survived translation: the open-drive continuation criteria and the time stop. What did not: averaging into a level, and "one more" after a green morning when the daily limit still had room. The prop sheet is uglier and more boring. That is the point. If a rule only works when you can press for the week, it is not prop-safe.

I keep both sheets side by side for a month when I am on a challenge. Divergence in behaviour shows up faster than divergence in P&L.

Keeping both sheets side by side is something I'd recommend to anyone starting a challenge. The behaviour gap shows up within a week, usually on the first green morning.

On the second attempt rule, I'd make "clean process stop" more concrete. Mine is that the first trade had to be entered on the planned trigger, with the planned size, and stopped without any adjustment. If I moved the stop even once, there's no second attempt.

Where I'd question the translation is the stop distance staying the same. With two attempts instead of three, the daily limit gives you more room per trade, so a slightly wider stop can survive more noise. I tested 0.5R instead of 0.4R on a few weeks of data and the win rate improved enough to cover it, though that will depend on the pair.

"Averaging into a level" not surviving is no surprise. It's the rule that looks fine until the one day it doesn't.

Did you find that the time stop needed changing for prop, or did it carry over unchanged?

One translation that changed my discretionary size mid day on prop was a green morning rule. Once I'm up more than 0.3% on the challenge, every new ticket drops to half the planned lot for the rest of the session.

That number came from three failed challenges where the afternoon gave back a clean London open. The pattern was the same each time: full size after a green morning, then one noisy retest that used most of the daily room.

Personal capital still runs full size after a green open. Prop does not, because the daily limit turns a normal scratch sequence into a breach risk.

I write the half size switch on the prop sheet next to the second attempt rule. That way it is not a judgement call at 10:30.

PropScalpDesk, do you cut size after a green morning on challenges, or only after a red one? I still argue with myself on personal accounts about the same switch.
