News blackout on FTMO: aligning with your IC Markets habits

Post by PropScalpDesk »

Again: read your own firm docs. My point is alignment between how I trade on a raw IC Markets account and how I behave on a challenge account that bans or restricts news.

On IC I already flat Tier-1 from T-15 and wait for spread snap-back. The challenge blackout is usually stricter or differently timed. I take the more restrictive of the two and put that on both sheets so I do not keep two clocks in my head.

Where people slip: trading the challenge account with personal-book timing because "the chart looks the same". The chart is the same. The contract is not. Aligning habits means the stricter clock wins everywhere that week, including personal capital if both screens are open. Split brains cause accidental clicks on the wrong account.

I also log which account was active for every ticket. That column alone paid for itself the week I almost hedged myself across books.

When the two clocks disagree, I write the chosen clock on a sticky on the challenge monitor. No mental arithmetic mid-spike.

Taking the stricter of the two clocks is sensible, and I'd add that it's worth writing down why. If I know the IC habit is T minus 15 because of spreads and the firm's window is about rule compliance, I'm less tempted to bend either.

The split brain problem is real. I've had both accounts open on the same pair with the same chart colours and closed a trade on the wrong one. Since then the challenge terminal gets a red background and a large label in the corner with the account name.

Logging which account was active for every ticket is a good habit. I'd add the time of the trade in the firm's server time too, because when there's a dispute about whether a trade was inside the window, the firm uses its own clock.

On the sticky note, I'd write the time in both zones if they differ. It takes a few seconds and removes one more piece of arithmetic.

Do you also stop trading the personal account during the challenge news window, or just the challenge?

Aligning the clocks turned out to be easier for me than aligning the stops. On my raw account I sometimes hold through a minor release with a stop in place, but on a challenge a stop that slips on a spike can breach the daily limit even when the idea was fine.

So I looked up the worst slippage past my stop around news on each instrument, and I assume that much again on the challenge. On EURUSD my worst was about 4 pips past the stop, while gold was several times that.

That number sets my challenge size on any day with a release, even a minor one. If my stop plus a 4 pip slip would use more than half the daily room I have left, the trade is too big.

It's also worth checking whether your firm counts floating losses against the daily limit or only closed ones. If floating counts, an open trade near a release is more dangerous than the stop distance suggests.

How do you treat second tier data like jobless claims? The firms I've read about rarely restrict it, but it moves the dollar enough to matter on a tight daily limit.
