Prop Firm Rule Changes Mid-Account: What Usually Applies to Existing Traders

Post by FXS Prop Desk »

Firms update rules, sometimes several times a year. The key question is whether changes apply to accounts already purchased.

Common approaches:
  • Grandfathering: existing accounts keep the rules from the purchase date.
  • Apply at next stage: rules change when you move from phase 1 to 2 or to funded.
  • Immediate: changes apply to everyone, usually announced by email with a short notice.
What you can do:
  • Save the terms and FAQ at purchase (PDF or web archive).
  • Subscribe to firm announcements, not only social media.
  • If a change affects your strategy (e.g. a new hold-time rule), ask in writing how it applies to your account.
Has a rule change ever affected an account you were already trading, and how did the firm handle it?

I save a PDF of the terms on purchase day and archive the FAQ the same afternoon. That habit paid off when a firm added a minimum hold time that would have killed my scalp style, then claimed the new rule applied to everyone immediately.

They eventually grandfathered phase one accounts after enough tickets, but only because several traders produced the old PDF. Without that file I would have been arguing from memory.

Email announcements beat social media for this. One change landed in a newsletter I almost filtered away, with a seventy two hour notice before funded accounts were affected.

I ask in writing whenever a rule touches execution, news windows, or consistency. Verbal chat replies have been walked back on me once, so the ticket trail matters.

Has a mid account change ever forced you to pause an evaluation rather than adapt? I paused once, finished under the old rules after clarification, and avoided starting a new strategy mid cycle under unclear language.
