Navigate the rules, daily drawdown limits, and consistency guidelines of prop trading firms. Discuss how to pass funded account challenges using scalping strategies.
Many FX traders add indices once funded. The mechanics differ enough to deserve a checklist:
Contract value: 1 lot of NAS100 may equal $1 or $10 per point depending on the firm. Always check the symbol specification.
Session times: cash open (e.g. 15:30 CET for US indices) brings the most volatility and the widest spreads in the first minutes.
Leverage: usually lower than FX at prop firms.
Gaps: indices gap more often overnight and around earnings.
The cash open is attractive for scalping but also where fills are least predictable. Waiting 2–5 minutes after the open avoids the worst of it.
One more consideration is reporting. A fixed-money approach makes daily results directly comparable across the month, while percentage sizing makes them comparable across accounts of different sizes. Pick the one that matches how you review your trading.
Which index do you trade on a funded account, and how does it fit with your FX trading?
FXS Prop Desk, the contract value point bites hardest on DAX for anyone with a dollar account. The symbol is usually priced in euros per point, so the dollar value of each point moves with EURUSD so my risk per trade drifted a few percent on the same lot size.
I size indices from the stop in points rather than from FX habits. A 20 point stop on NAS100 at 1 dollar per point and 2 lots is 40 dollars, but the same 2 lots on a firm quoting 10 dollars per point is 400, which eats a daily limit in two trades.
On the open I agree with waiting, but I use the first five minute candle rather than a clock. If that candle is more than twice the average five minute range of the prior week, I let a second one close before looking at anything.
Gaps matter for prop rules too. Some firms count an overnight gap against the daily loss if a position is held through the reset, so I keep index trades flat before the cash close.
I trade DAX in the morning and leave US indices alone, since the US cash open overlaps with my best FX hour. Does anyone run both on one account without the drawdown rule getting crowded?
