Minimum Trading Days: Strategies for Meeting the Requirement Safely

Post by FXS Prop Desk »

Many challenges require a minimum number of trading days (often 3–5, sometimes 10). If you hit the target on day two, you still need the remaining days.

Safe ways to complete them:
  • Trade the minimum: one small position per day, with a tight stop, in your normal session.
  • Check what counts as a "trading day": usually a day with at least one trade opened, measured by server time.
  • Avoid using the extra days to "build more buffer" with normal size. Once the target is met, the only thing that can happen is losing it.
Things to avoid:
  • Opening a trade at 23:59 and closing at 00:01 to get two days for one — some firms explicitly disallow it.
  • Leaving a trade open over a reset day if equity-based daily limits apply.
Has anyone had a challenge failed on a "filler day" trade, and what size do you use for those?

Front loading the minimum days early in the challenge feels productive and then becomes a trap. Once the profit target is hit on day two, the remaining days are pure risk, so I drip one small ticket per day in the normal session instead of hunting for more buffer.

Size down late in the challenge is mandatory for me. After the target is banked I trade at a quarter of challenge size with a tight stop, only to register the day, never to improve the equity curve.

The inactive day trap is subtler. Some firms count a day only if a trade is opened by server time, so sitting flat feels safe until you realise you still owe days and the calendar is short.

I avoid the 23:59 open and 00:01 close trick entirely. Even when the rules do not ban it, the habit of gaming the clock leaks into other decisions I care about more.

What size do you use on filler days once the target is met, and have you ever failed a challenge on one of those small tickets? I nearly did once at half size and cut to quarter after that.

FXS Prop Desk, the rule I would add to the list is the consistency cap some firms attach to payouts. On one programme no single day could account for more than 40 percent of total profit, so a big day two plus tiny filler days fails the cap even with every other rule met.

With a 1,000 dollar day inside a 1,200 total, that day is 83 percent of profit. Getting under 40 would need another 1,300 later, the opposite of a low risk plan.

So I read the payout terms before the challenge terms now. If a cap exists, I aim for an even daily target from the start rather than taking the big day and coasting.

On filler tickets, I pick the day as carefully as the size. A Tuesday with CPI in the session is a bad day to register, so I place the trade in a quiet hour and close it within 15 minutes.

Bank holidays catch people out as well. Most firms count any day the server is open, but a few skip days when their main market is closed, and that can cost a day near the deadline.

Does anyone check the minimum lot size that counts? I have read of one firm where 0.01 lots did not register.
