Troubleshooting, Why Do I Overtrade?

If you take more trades than your plan calls for, you're not alone. Overtrading is one of the most common problems, and understanding its causes helps you fix it.

Common causes:

- Boredom during slow markets
- Fear of missing out
- Trying to recover losses
- Excitement from wins
- Believing more trades mean more profit
- Lack of a clear plan or daily limit
- Having the platform open all day

Diagnostic steps:

1. Count your average trades per day and compare it with your plan.
2. Check which trades were outside your criteria.
3. Note times, emotions, and sessions when overtrading happened.
4. Calculate the results of planned trades versus extra trades.

Solutions:

- Set a daily trade limit and stick to it
- Define a precise A+ setup
- Limit trading to a fixed window
- Use alerts instead of staring
- Close the platform when finished
- Add a rule: write the reason for each trade before entering
- Replace trading with another activity during downtime
- Review the cost of overtrading in your journal

Many traders find that their extra trades have negative expectancy, and removing them improves results immediately.

If overtrading continues despite rules, consider reducing risk or switching to demo until control improves.

Fewer trades done well beat many trades done poorly.

Something to try: write down the number of trades you're allowed in a session on a sticky note and cross one off each time you enter. Physical tally, not a mental one. Seeing only one box left changes how picky you are with it. I'd pair it with a rule about what happens when the boxes run out: platform closed, no exceptions, even if a perfect setup appears five minutes later. That's the part that makes it work. If you allow yourself one extra for a really good one, every setup starts looking like a really good one. Check your journal after a month and compare results with your earlier, unlimited sessions.

Waiting for a scheduled event is a trigger missing from the list. The hour before a big release is often slow, and if the plan is to trade the number, the screen is already open and attention is already up. That's when small, unplanned trades creep in "while I wait". If your journal shows extra trades bunched before release times, the fix may be to arrive ten minutes before the number rather than an hour.

I'd also look at when the extra trades happen. For me it was almost always the last hour of the session, after I'd been sitting there for a while with nothing. Ending the session earlier fixed more than any rule did. Mark the time of each trade in your journal and look at the distribution. If the overtrades cluster at a certain time, set an alarm 30 minutes before and close the platform when it goes. Another useful limit is a maximum of two or three trades a day. Once you hit it, you're done regardless of what the chart shows.
