Troubleshooting, Why Does Price Reverse Right After My Stop Is Hit?

This is perhaps the most frustrating experience in trading. Your stop triggers, and price immediately goes your way. Before concluding the market is out to get you, consider the most likely causes.

1. Stop placed too tight. Normal noise reaches it before the real move.

2. Stop at an obvious level. Many traders place stops at the same spot, making it a liquidity target.

3. Early entry. You entered before confirmation, so price needed to sweep further first.

4. Wrong volatility assumption. The stop doesn't match current ATR.

5. Spread effects. Wider spreads trigger stops on sell positions at the ask, or the reverse for buys.

6. Genuine liquidity sweep. Price takes stops, then reverses. It's part of the market's structure.

7. Bias error. The idea was wrong, and the later move was coincidental.

Steps to improve:

- Place stops beyond structure, with a buffer
- Use ATR to check whether the stop distance is reasonable
- Wait for confirmation after the sweep before entering
- Consider reducing size instead of tightening the stop
- Review your stopped-out trades: how often did price later reach your target?

If many of your stops are hit within a few pips of your level before reversal, test wider stops with smaller size.

Treat it as data about your stop placement, not as a conspiracy.

A test I'd add: go back through your last ten stop outs and measure how far past your stop price went before reversing. If it's usually only a few pips, your stop placement is sitting right where everyone else's is. Moving it beyond the obvious level, with smaller size, often fixes most of it. If price went far past your stop before turning, the problem is different. Your entry was probably early or against the trend, and the stop was doing its job. Both cases feel the same in the moment, so measuring them is the only way to know which fix you need. Ten trades is enough to see a rough pattern.

Number 5 is worth expanding with a time element. If you go back through stopped-out trades and note the clock time of each stop, you may find a cluster at specific moments: 13:30 London on US data days, the rollover around 10pm, or the hour after it when liquidity is thin. Those aren't random reversals. The spread widens or a release candle spikes through the level and retraces, and the stop is filled at the worst point.

Wider stops with smaller size help, but avoiding open positions with tight stops across those particular minutes fixes the problem more directly. Checking the timestamps is usually enough to tell whether you're dealing with stop placement or with timing.

Also check if the stop was placed at a level, or a fixed distance that just happened to land near one. Fixed-pip stops land in silly places sometimes. A stop should sit where the idea is wrong, not where the maths said 15 pips. Then work out the lot size from that stop distance. If the stop needs 25 pips, the position gets smaller, but the dollar risk stays the same. It also helps to add a few pips beyond the level for spread and wicks. On EURUSD I add 3 to 5 pips past the swing point, more on GBPJPY.
