Asking support before assuming, the rule questions that saved me from a breach

prop firm rules are written in a way that often leaves gray areas. Is a trade closed by a stop in the news window a violation? Does a pending order that triggers inside it count? What counts as the same trade for a consistency rule? I used to guess. Now I ask.

My routine is to write the question clearly, with a specific scenario, and send it to support by chat or email. I want the answer in writing so I have a record. I save a screenshot or a copy of the reply with the date.

The answers have surprised me a couple of times. Once the rule was stricter than I thought, and another time it was looser. In both cases, knowing for sure changed how I traded. If I'd guessed wrong in the first case, it could have cost me the account.

If the answer is vague or contradicts the website, I ask again or ask for clarification. A firm that can't give a clear answer to a simple rules question isn't one I want to rely on.

It takes a few minutes to ask and could save weeks of effort. I'd rather ask a silly question than make a costly assumption.

Strongly agree on getting it in writing. I had a support agent tell me something in live chat, and later a different agent said the opposite. Because I had the chat saved with the date, it was easy to show what I had been told. Now I always ask them to confirm by email for anything that could affect a breach, and I keep a simple document with every question and answer. Firms also update their rules, so I check the date on my notes and ask again if it has been a few months.

A tip on how to ask: give them a specific scenario with times and order types instead of a general question. If you ask whether news trading is allowed, you get a general answer. If you ask whether a buy limit placed an hour before a release that fills one minute after the release is a violation, you get a real answer. The more specific the question, the less room there is for misunderstanding, and the more useful the reply is when you look back at it later.
