Trading and Personal Values, Why Your Rules Should Match Who You Are

Rules that clash with your values are hard to keep. If you hate rushing, a scalping system will feel like torture. If you value security, high-risk strategies will make you anxious. Aligning your trading with your values makes discipline easier.

Questions to explore:

1. What matters most to me? Stability, freedom, growth, family, honesty?

2. How do I feel about risk? Be honest, not aspirational.

3. How do I want to spend my time? Do I want hours at the screen, or a short routine?

4. What kind of reputation do I want? Reliable, transparent, thoughtful?

5. What would I never do? For example, never promise guaranteed returns, never risk rent money.

How to apply your answers:

- Choose a trading style that fits your temperament
- Set risk limits that let you sleep well
- Write a short personal code, such as "I will be honest about my results" or "I will not trade when I'm angry"
- Align your content, if you share publicly, with your values
- Revisit your code regularly

Benefits:

- Greater consistency
- Less internal conflict
- More satisfaction beyond profits

Trading isn't only a technical activity. It also reflects your character.

Build your approach on principles you respect, and following them will feel less like obedience and more like integrity.

Example from my own setup: I don't like rushing, so I dropped 1 minute entries and moved to the 15 minute chart. My trade count fell, but I stopped breaking rules out of panic, because I finally had time to think before each entry. That's the kind of change that rarely shows up in strategy discussions, but it made a big difference. If you notice you keep breaking the same rule, ask whether the rule fits who you are. Someone who hates uncertainty overnight will keep closing swing trades early. Someone who values family evenings will resent a strategy that needs the New York afternoon. Fit the method to the person first.

Try writing down your values first and then look at your trading plan. If you value family time and your plan requires trading at 2am, something has to change. It's easier to fix the plan than to fight yourself every night. For example, someone who values evenings with family might trade the London morning from 8am Lagos before work, or use daily charts and set orders once a day. Someone who values calm might choose swing trading with fewer decisions. The strategy can usually be adjusted to fit your life. Forcing your life around a strategy rarely lasts.
