Prop Firm Platforms Compared: MT5, cTrader, DXtrade and Match-Trader for Scalping

Post by FXS Prop Desk »

Platform choice at a prop firm is often decided by what the firm offers, not by the trader. Each one behaves a little differently for short-term trading.
  • MT5: widest EA and indicator support, one-click trading, depth of market on some servers. Netting vs hedging mode depends on the account.
  • cTrader: clear Level II, detailed execution reports, cBots in C#. Many scalpers like the order ticket and the way slippage is shown.
  • DXtrade: web-first, simple interface, fewer automation options.
  • Match-Trader: browser and mobile, quick setup, limited custom tooling.
Questions to test in a trial before buying:
  • Can you place a stop and target on entry with one click?
  • Does the platform show the actual fill price and slippage per order?
  • Can you run your position-size calculator or a script?
Which platform does your prop account run on, and what is the one feature you miss most?

Mine runs on MT5, and your first trial question is where it falls short out of the box. The one click panel sends a market order with no stop or target attached, so for a few seconds after every entry the trade is naked until I drag the levels on.

The usual fix is a trade panel EA or script that sends the order with both levels in one go. That's worth clearing with the firm before the challenge, because some rule books lump any EA under third party software.

Netting versus hedging deserves its own test too. On a netting account a second buy merges into the first position with one averaged entry and one stop, which quietly breaks any plan that scales in with separate stops.

The feature I miss most is the market range setting in cTrader, which caps how far a market order can fill from the price you clicked. On MT5 I only find out the slippage afterwards, in the history.

For the browser platforms I'd add one trial check, leaving the tab in the background for twenty minutes during a live session to see whether alerts and the feed kept up. Does anyone know if DXtrade shows slippage per order the way you describe for cTrader?

FXS Prop Desk, one more trial test I would add is how fast you can get flat. I time it with three positions open, closing all of them as if a headline just hit.

On my MT5 setup with a close all script on a hotkey, it takes about two seconds. On a web platform trial where I had to close each position from the list, it took seven or eight, and one click landed on the wrong row.

Hotkeys are worth checking for the same reason. cTrader lets you map buy, sell and close to keys, while in a browser some key combinations get grabbed by the browser itself, so test them inside the trading tab.

The daily candle is a smaller trap. Two platforms at the same firm closed the day at different hours, so my previous day high on one sat about 15 pips from the other, and every level I had copied across was off.

Does the firm let a trader switch platform between the challenge and the funded stage? I would want to know that before building a routine around one of them.
