Is Your Demo Account Realistic? Checking Before You Trust Your Results

Demo accounts are essential for learning, but not all demo environments reflect real trading conditions. Before trusting your demo results, check how realistic they are.

Things to compare:

1. Execution speed. Demo orders may fill instantly, while live orders can face delays and slippage.

2. Spreads. Some demos show tighter or fixed spreads that differ from live.

3. Liquidity. On demo, large orders fill perfectly. Live markets may not.

4. Account size. A $100,000 demo account encourages careless sizing. Use a size that matches your planned live account.

5. Commissions and swaps. Make sure they are included.

6. Psychological pressure. Demo has none of the real emotions.

How to make demo more useful:

- Set the demo balance to your real intended amount
- Use the same risk percentage you'll use live
- Record costs manually if the platform doesn't include them
- Trade only during your planned hours
- Journal as seriously as you would live
- Test during news events to see how fills behave, and compare with live small-lot experience later

After a period on demo, transition to a small live account to learn the differences.

Demo results should be considered a rough indicator, not a guarantee.

Treat demo as a flight simulator: valuable, but not the same as flying the plane.

A quick check you can run today: place the same trade on demo and live with the smallest possible size at the same moment and compare the fills and spreads. Do it a few times across different sessions. If the demo is consistently better, your demo results are flattering you. Also compare the swap and commission lines in the account history, since some demos leave those out entirely. Once you know the gap, you can adjust your demo numbers. For example, if live spreads are typically half a pip wider on EURUSD, subtract that from every demo trade in your journal and see whether the strategy still holds up. A thin edge on demo often disappears with that one change.

Compare slippage during news as well. Demo accounts often fill news trades at prices that would never be possible live. If your demo results rely heavily on news trades, be extra careful before trusting them. One test is to run a live micro account alongside the demo for a month, placing the same trades at the same time. Record the fill price on both. On normal trades the difference is usually small, but around NFP or CPI the live fills can be several pips worse. If that gap wipes out most of the demo profit, the strategy needs to avoid news or accept a lower expectancy.
