A stretch of breakeven trades and how I stopped forcing it

I had a spell where almost every trade ended near breakeven. Not big losses, not wins, just small scratches over and over. It was more frustrating than a losing streak, because I was spending effort and getting nothing.

What I did in response was wrong at first. I started tweaking my entries, adding filters, changing targets, because I felt something must be broken. Then I took the time to look at the market conditions during that stretch. It was a period of low volatility, narrow ranges and no clear direction. My setups were working as designed, but the market wasn't giving them room.

So I did something that felt like nothing: I reduced my trading frequency and waited. I made sure the setups I took were the best ones and I accepted smaller days. When volatility came back, the results came back too.

The lesson is that a flat period isn't always a sign that the strategy is wrong. Check the conditions first. Changing a plan because of a few weeks of low volatility is how you ruin a good one.

What helped me see it was a volatility measure. I put the daily ATR on the chart and compared it to the previous few months. During my flat spell the daily range was clearly smaller than usual. Once I saw that, it was obvious my targets were just too far for the conditions, and the trades were reaching breakeven before running out of room. That was the moment I stopped looking for something broken in my rules. The rules were fine, the market was just asleep.

One thing I would add is that a run of scratches can still cost money once you include spread and commission. Each breakeven trade was actually a small loss after costs. Over a few weeks that added up. Trading less during that period did not just reduce frustration, it also stopped that slow bleed. When the market is quiet, fewer trades often means a better result even if the setups themselves are fine. I now look at the cost column during quiet spells, because it shows the drag that the result column hides when everything rounds to zero.
