Fading stretched moves away from the daily open on EURGBP, a calm mean reversion setup
EURGBP is one of the quietest pairs I trade and it tends to rotate around the daily open much more than it trends. So I use the daily open as a magnet and look to fade moves that stretch too far from it.
On M5 I measure how far price has moved from the open and compare it to a typical morning range, roughly what I see on an average day for the pair. When price is up at the stretched end, say it's well beyond the usual distance, and I see a slowing sign like smaller candles or a rejection wick, I take a short back toward the open. Stop is beyond the extreme, and target is the open itself.
It is a low volatility pair so the spread matters more than usual. I only take this when the spread is at its normal tight level, which is mainly the London morning. Asia is too thin and late NY has odd spreads.
When it fails is on a news day or when one of the two currencies is moving on a story. If the move has a clear fundamental reason, I leave it alone. This setup is for no news days where price just wandered off.

For the typical morning range, I keep a small note of how far EURGBP usually travels from the daily open by midday, measured over the last month or so. I update it every couple of weeks because the pair goes through quieter and busier phases. When price is beyond that usual distance and slowing down, that is my cue to look for the fade. Without a number in front of me, I found I was calling everything stretched, which turned into a lot of bad shorts.

On the stop, I give it a little more room than I would on a faster pair, because EURGBP likes to make one last small push beyond the extreme before turning. I keep the size smaller to compensate so the money at risk stays the same. The target at the open is not huge either, so I only take it when the distance gives me at least one and a half times the risk. Below that, the spread eats too much of it.

A quick check I do before taking the trade is to look at EURUSD and GBPUSD at the same time. If both are moving calmly and EURGBP is just drifting, it is usually a pure cross move with no real driver, and those revert nicely. If one of them is moving sharply on its own news, the cross is being pushed by a story, and I leave it alone even if the distance from the open looks perfect. A calm cross on a calm day is the whole point of this setup.
