Hedging and FIFO rules by region, what they mean for scalpers

depending on where your account is regulated, there may be rules on whether you can hold opposite positions on the same pair, and in what order you have to close trades. These rules can affect how you manage partial exits, and I didn't know much about them until I came across them.

Under a no hedging rule, if you're long and then you open a short on the same pair, it just closes or reduces the long. Under FIFO, if you have several positions in the same pair, you have to close the oldest first. That affects how you scale in and out. If you take a partial close on a later entry, the platform might close an earlier one instead.

For me it matters when I scale out. I check how the account treats multiple trades, then I plan how I enter. Sometimes I use one position and adjust it instead of opening several separate ones.

If you're moving between brokers or regions, read the account terms for these rules. It's a small detail that can cause a mess in the middle of a fast trade.

A practical workaround I use under FIFO is to enter with one position and then reduce it with partial closes instead of opening several separate trades. The platform treats it as one position, so there is no confusion over which entry gets closed first. If I want to add to a winner, I accept that the average price changes and plan the stop for the whole thing. It is less flexible, but it avoids the platform closing something I did not intend.

Also check whether your EA assumes hedging is allowed. Plenty of EAs written for hedging accounts open a buy and a sell at the same time or manage several positions on one pair. On a netting account they behave very differently, and the results can be nothing like the backtest. I found this out when I moved an EA to an account with different rules. Now I test any EA on a demo with the same account type before running it.
