Binary Options: Why Regulators Banned Them for Retail Clients
Binary options offer a fixed payout if a price is above or below a level at a set time, and nothing otherwise. They look like simple bets, and that simplicity hides the structure.
The payout is typically below the amount risked. A trade might pay 80 percent of the stake if right and lose 100 percent if wrong. To break even, you need to win about 55.6 percent of the time, before any other costs. Most traders do not achieve it.
Many binary options platforms were unregulated, and complaints about withdrawal refusals, price manipulation, and aggressive sales practices were widespread. Regulators responded. The European Securities and Markets Authority banned the marketing, distribution, and sale of binary options to retail clients in 2018, and the UK followed in 2019. Other jurisdictions imposed restrictions or bans.
The product encourages gambling behavior. Short expiries, such as one minute or five minutes, produce rapid feedback and strong emotional reinforcement.
Unlike regular options, binary options do not allow you to manage the trade once placed, and the payoff does not scale with the size of the move.
If you encounter a platform offering them, check regulation first, and understand that regulators banned them in major markets for reasons.
Education about forex and options does not require them.
Practical step: calculate the break-even win rate for a binary option paying 85 percent, and compare it with your best historical win rate.

i tried binary options like many years ago and i find out, that they are not suitable for me.
Binary options function less as financial derivatives and more as structured negative-expectancy wagers, fundamentally designed to generate a mathematical edge for the house (the broker). By stripping away the variables of magnitude and trade management, they reduce market speculation to a rigid, binary outcome that heavily favors the platform acting as the sole counterparty.

The Mathematics of Negative Expectancy
The core flaw of a binary option lies in its inverted risk-to-reward ratio. In traditional spot forex or equity scalping, risk can be aggressively managed—a trader might risk 1 unit to make 2 or 3 units (a 1:2 or 1:3 R:R), allowing for profitability even with a sub-50% win rate.Binary options flip this dynamic. Because the payout is fixed below 100% of the staked capital, the trader is permanently operating with a negative risk-to-reward ratio. To execute the practical step requested, calculating the break-even win rate ($W$) for a binary option paying 85% requires setting the Expected Value ($EV$) to zero:
A break-even win rate of 54.05% is exceptionally high for a retail trading environment. For comparison, institutional algorithmic models and professional price-action scalpers often operate profitably with win rates between 40% and 50% purely by letting winning trades run and cutting losses instantly. Binaries demand a near-impossible long-term strike rate just to tread water, ensuring that statistical variance eventually drains the trader's account.

Market Microstructure and the Expiry Flaw
For a trader analyzing 1-minute or 5-minute charts, identifying directional momentum, liquidity sweeps, or order block rejections is entirely viable. However, binary options introduce a fatal mechanical constraint: the rigid time expiry.
In spot markets, a trade can be given room to breathe; a stop-loss can be trailed, and positions can be scaled out as liquidity is absorbed. In a binary option, you are attempting to predict not just direction, but direction at an exact, arbitrary timestamp down to the second. At the sub-minute level, market microstructure is dominated by algorithmic noise, spread widening, and order-book imbalances. A trade can be directionally correct but lose 100% of its capital because a micro-pip spread fluctuation occurred exactly at the moment of expiry.

Counterparty Risk and B-Book Manipulation
Unlike vanilla options (which are standardized and traded on centralized exchanges like the CBOE with underlying Greeks like Delta, Gamma, and Theta), retail binary options are Over-The-Counter (OTC) products. The platform is not a broker connecting you to a liquidity provider; the platform is the sole counterparty. They operate a 100% B-book model.
When a retail client wins, the broker loses money directly from their own balance sheet. This inherent conflict of interest led to the widespread industry abuses that triggered regulatory bans:
Price Feed Manipulation: Because the broker controls the proprietary price feed, they can easily spike the price by a fraction of a pip at the moment of expiry to force a high volume of client positions Out of The Money (OTM).
Withdrawal Blocks: Many platforms utilized predatory "bonus lock-ins," crediting accounts with trading bonuses that required impossible volume thresholds before any underlying capital could be withdrawn.
Requotes and Slippage: Artificially delaying entries during high volatility to ensure the client receives the worst possible strike price.

The Regulatory Guillotine
The aggressive gamification of these platforms—featuring flashing interfaces, ticking countdowns, and dopamine-inducing 60-second expiries—prompted regulators to classify them as gambling rather than investing.
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) recognized that the structural negative expectancy and OTC manipulation were systemic. Their 2018 prohibition on the marketing, distribution, and sale of binary options to retail clients fundamentally wiped out the European industry (previously centered in Cyprus). The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) permanently codified this ban in 2019, explicitly stating that binary options serve no legitimate investment purpose.
Today, platforms still offering binary options almost exclusively operate out of offshore, unregulated jurisdictions (e.g., St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Vanuatu). Any capital deposited into these unregulated entities lacks completely basic financial protections, operating far outside the legitimate frameworks of algorithmic or discretionary trading.

Re: Binary Options: Why Regulators Banned Them for Retail Clients
The break-even maths is all you need. Paying 80 percent on a win and losing 100 percent on a loss means you need well over half right just to stand still. Work it out: win 0.8, lose 1, so you need a win rate of 1 divided by 1.8, about 55.6 percent. On short expiries like one minute, where price movement is close to random, getting 55 percent consistently is extremely hard. Some platforms pay 70 percent or less on certain assets, which pushes the break-even to around 59 percent. Compare that with spot trading, where a 1 to 2 risk to reward lets you break even at about 33 percent.

If an ad is pushing one-minute binaries, that alone tells you who it's built for. That's slot machine timing, not trading. A one minute expiry gives you no time to apply any analysis, and the results come back fast enough to keep you clicking, much like a betting app. Many of these ads still target people in Nigeria, Kenya, India and other places where the European ban doesn't apply. Common signs are influencers showing big wins on their phones, promises of daily income, and accounts that make withdrawals difficult. If someone offers to manage your binary account for a share of profits, that's almost always the next scam.
